[02] Occupation regime sets terms for teacher's return

Eleni Foka said today the illegal regime demanded she withdrew her appeal to the European Court of Human Rights and stop teaching in order to permit her to return home.

Speaking during a Cypriot students' anti-occupation demonstration in Nicosia, Foka said the terms were conveyed to her through UN officials on the island.

Foka lodged an appeal for the violation of her right to return to her village in the occupied Karpass peninsula, in the eastern tip, where she taught Greek Cypriot children.

She had come to the government-controlled areas earlier this year with the help of the government and the UN, for health reasons, after being reassured she would be able to return home.

Foka had been locked in a long and often bitter battle with the occupation regime, that considers her as outspoken and often tried to make her leave the occupied areas.

The students today expressed support to Foka and demanded her return, as well as the withdrawal of Turkish troops, the return of all refugees and the humane treatment of enclaved persons.

Approximately 550 Greek Cypriots and Maronites continue to live in the occupied area, more than 23 years after Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

In a resolution to the UN Secretary-General the students express despair over the occupation of part of Cyprus, which, they said, constitutes a provocation for civilised humanity.

[03] Euro-MP denounces Turkish threats

Pauline Green said a resolution adopted yesterday by the European Parliament makes clear that the "war mongery" coming from Rauf Denktash is "completely unacceptable to us".

"We dismiss him and we make it clear that we are appalled by his statements and ask for them to be withdrawn," she said in an interview with London Greek Radio (LGR).

On August 25, Denktash threatened with war if Cyprus is allowed to join the European Union (EU).

Green noted the European Parliament has recognised there is opposition to Denktash and Turkish Cypriot leaders who are "at least willing to talk in a sophisticated, mature way about how you solve the Cyprus problem".

"People here are now aware that Denktash is not the only voice of the Turkish Cypriot community," she said.

The Euro MP said the resolution made clear that Cyprus-EU accession talks will start around March or April 1998 and rejects Turkey's attempts to tie them with its own bid to join the EU.

"We do not believe that Cyprus can be vetoed by Turkey, neither that Turkey's application can be tied with Cyprus' application. The two things are completely different," she said.

Green added that the EU wants good relations with Ankara and understands Turkey is eligible for accession, provided it meets EU criteria.

"That includes human rights, democracy, and of course, the two issues that are very difficult for the EU with regards to Turkey: the Kurdish issue and the Cyprus problem," she said.

The Socialist group leader said the resolution reminds of the European Parliament's commitment to a Cyprus settlement and its desire to see Greek and Turkish Cypriots join the EU.

Green confirmed she will visit Cyprus on October 11 and 12 for meetings with government and UN officials, MP's and others.

[04] Britons' jail sentence halved

The court reduced the sentence of Paul Whylbrow, 47 and Michael Flack, 52, both from Bexley southeast London. The two men were jailed to 18 months in June for burglary and stealing documents from a customs agent in February this year.

They confessed to stealing documents relating to the import of raw materials by local pharmaceutical companies from a customs clearing house in the southern port town of Limassol.

Whylbrow and Flack were arrested as they were about to board an airplane bound for London.

Under the court decision, they could now be eligible for release as early as next week.

The court accepted the argument by Cypriot lawyer Nicos Clerides that it was not legally permissible for the first instance court to jail the two men based on the probability that their actions caused harm to pharmaceutical companies.

Clerides said the plaintiff was a customs agent and not a pharmaceutical company.
