1115:CYPPRESS:01[01] Gilman welcomes agreement for dialogue on securityWashington, Sep 16 (CNA) -- Chairman of the US House International Relations Committee, Ben Gilman, has welcomed the announcement of a dialogue on security issues between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.Gilman praised the efforts of US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Miller and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in persuading the two leaders to continue the meetings they had earlier this summer. Cautioning against raising expectations too high, Gilman said an agreement on concrete measures for greater security for all the people of Cyprus could be reached if both sides showed good-will, and urged the two leaders to make the best out of the occasion. The announcement of the agreement of President Clerides and Denktash to meet in Nicosia to discuss security issues, was made yesterday by Albright during a quick stop-over at Larnaca airport on her way from Lebanon to Washington. The Cyprus problem "should be kept in the spotlight" and "on the top of the agenda at every opportunity," Brereton said, adding that a strong resolution on Cyprus will be entertained at the Labour Party National Conference. Asked to comment on yesterday's announcement of a dialogue on security issues between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the Australian deputy said "any steps that can ease the tension, any improvements no matter how small, are taken as steps along the line towards a just equitable solution." Brereton and MP Nick Bolkus arrived last Sunday for a four-day official visit to Cyprus, at the invitation of the House of Representatives. On his part, Kyprianou described the meeting as very interesting and said the Australian MPs "could contribute in the general effort of exercising pressure on Turkey through the US, Britain and Europe for a just solution to the Cyprus problem."
