This was pointed out last night by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides speaking at an official dinner in honour of Commonwealth Secretary General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, currently visiting the island.

Noting the consistent support of the Commonwealth to "a just and viable solution to the longstanding problem of Cyprus", Kasoulides expressed "deepest appreciation and gratitude for this steadfast solidarity to our struggle for freedom and justice", adding that Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meetings (CHOGM) Communiques, "speak eloquently on the situation in Cyprus" and "encourage us to continue our efforts" for a Cyprus settlement.

"Cyprus has already participated in several election monitoring missions and has been actively involved in such working groups as those on the Criteria for Commonwealth Membership, on the Emergence of a Global Humanitarian Order and on Refugees and Displaced Persons", Kasoulides said.

Chief Anyaoku is on a three-day official visit to Cyprus and he will be received tomorrow by President Glafcos Clerides and President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou to discuss recent developments in the Cyprus problem.
