[02] Diaspora leaders stress Hellenism must speak with one voice

Nicosia, Aug 25 (CNA) -- Cypriots from more than eight countries began a meeting in Nicosia today to discuss ways to promote a settlement of the Cyprus problem and solve problems they face in their host countries.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 10th International Conference of Overseas Cypriots, International Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) President, George Christofides said Cyprus, Greece and Hellenes of the diaspora must coordinate their actions and speak with one voice.

He noted that Turkey's intractable position on Cyprus is continuously proven, but stressed that overseas Cypriots affirm the efforts of President Glafcos Clerides and the island's political leadership for their "genuine disposition and political will to find a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem".

Christofides said that after the failure of two rounds of direct negotiations between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in the US and Switzerland, it is necessary that the Greek Cypriot side "re-consolidates its strength and tactics in the direction of realising its rightful claims and taking advantage of every measure of strength that Hellenism now possesses in all parts of the world".

The POMAK President expressed his conviction that the Cypriot diaspora "never ceases to struggle on all levels for an end to the Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus" and noted that "we have no margins for sitting back or wavering".

In his address, President of the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), Philip Christopher, stressed that in spite of international indifference towards the Cyprus problem since Turkey's 1974 invasion of the island, Cypriots of the diaspora have kept the cause for freedom alive and that is finally paying dividends.

"After 23 years, I am happy to say that today, Cyprus is on the frontburner of American foreign policy. President Clinton and Vice- President Gore know the problem. The Congress and the Senate are totally involved, and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is also involved," Christopher said.

The PSEKA President noted that diaspora leaders who have passed away had fought for a just solution in Cyprus, but their dream of a reunified Cyprus is kept alive in the aspirations and the work of all those who have succeeded them.

Addressing the Conference, Council of Overseas Hellenes (SAE) President, Andrew Athens, said that all Hellenes abroad are united in spirit and deed with their Cypriot brethren in the common cause for a free and reunified Cyprus.

Athens praised the Greek government's decision to create SAE because, as he noted, Hellenism united presents a more powerful front in countering the problems it faces.

"Now is the time for us to really exert pressure in a unified way. Our job as Hellenes around the world is to work closely with the Cypriot and Greek governments, hand in hand."

Party leaders also addressed the participants, stressing that overseas Cypriots constitute the best ambassadors for the cause of a free and reunified Cyprus.

They praised Diaspora members for their untiring work in doing everything within their power to promote a just solution of the Cyprus problem to foreign governments.

In their address, representatives from overseas Cypriots' organisations in Great Britain, Australia, the US, Canada, Greece, Europe, South Africa and Africa, pledged their unwavering support for a just solution of the Cyprus problem and reaffirmed their commitment to work hard in that direction.
