[02] Clerides wants to see UN Security Council act

Speaking after a Council of Ministers meeting, held at the presidential residence in the Troodos mountains, President Clerides said "no progress on the Cyprus issue can be achieved if the Security Council does not decide its stance, should Turkish intransigence continue."

The President pointed out that both Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, and Ankara are intransigent in their positions.

Asked to comment on reports that the US and Britain will refrain from blaming the Turkish side for the deadlock in the Cyprus peace talks, the President noted that both countries want the negotiations to continue.

"They want the negotiating process to continue and avoid anything that may create a problem," he added.

The President called on the US and Britain to "call a spade a spade" and present a true picture of what has happened during the past two rounds of UN-led talks.

"They are being misled if they believe they can bring Denktash back to the negotiating table, by avoiding to present a clear picture," Clerides said.

Denktash brought the UN talks to a standstill because he insisted the European Union postpones or reverses its decision to begin accession talks with Cyprus, scheduled early 1998.

UN Secretary-General's special advisor for Cyprus, Diego Cordovez, who chaired the talks in August and July, will brief the Security Council later today on their outcome.

Denktash accused the EU of "throwing a bombshell" during the first round of talks in the US and said at the end of the second round in Switzerland he would not attend any further talks until the EU report "Agenda 2000" is ratified in December.

The report reaffirmed an EU Council decision, in March 1995, to begin membership talks with Cyprus six months after the conclusion of the Intergovernmental Conference.
