1015 CYPPRESS:01[01] Police say Turkish agents may be behind murder of Turkish CypriotNicosia, Aug 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus police believe the Turkish secret service (MIT) may be involved in the murder of a Turkish Cypriot underworld figure and are almost certain the culprit may have had at least one abettor who helped him make good his escape from the scene of the crime.State Pathologist Sofoclis Sofocleous yesterday conducted an autopsy on the body of 37-year-old Jian Nejip Hekkemes and found that the victim was shot five times at nearly point blank range, three times in the head and two in the back. Hekkemes was shot Saturday by a gunman while riding his motorcycle in the Turkish Cypriot district of the southwestern coastal town of Limassol. The autopsy was conducted in the presence of a Turkish Cypriot doctor who arrived from the Turkish-occupied areas to represent the family of the murdered man. Two of Hekkemes' relatives had also come. After the five-hour autopsy, Hekkemes' corpse was taken to the occupied areas and will be buried today in the village of Geunyeli where his relatives live. Hekkemes had been arrested earlier this year on suspicion of spying on National Guard military positions, but was released for lack of evidence. Fourteen people have been interrogated in relation to the murder, among them some Turkish Cypriots living in Limassol. "With this year's demonstrations, we aim to boost the morale of Famagusta's residents as well as that of other occupied towns to continue the struggle for final justification and to promote the Cyprus problem, particularly the overbearing violation of basic freedoms and human rights by Turkish forces of occupation," Famagusta Mayor, Andreas Pouyiouros, said today in a press conference. This year's demonstrations are highlighted by the Municipal Council's decision to make world renown Greek singer/songwriter, Giorgos Dalaras, an honorary resident of Famagusta. Pouyiouros said that numerous political personalities from Greece and other countries have been invited to attend the demonstrations, including British deputies and long-time supporters of the Cyprus cause, Tom Cox and Eddy O'Hara. The demonstrations will take place near Dherynia checkpoint, in a field close to the UN-controlled buffer zone where two unarmed Greek Cypriot demonstrators were brutally murdered last year by Turkish extremists and occupation troops. A day prior to the demonstrations, letters protesting the Turkey's invasion and continuing occupation of Cyprus will be given to the embassies here of the five permanent UN Security Council member countries. Meanwhile, the Mayor and Councillors of the Turkish-occupied town of Morphou, today presented their own protest letter to the embassies of the five permanent UN Security Council members. In the letter, Morphou Mayor Antigoni Papadopoulou stressed that the people of Morphou, who have been forced to live away from their homes and land as refugees for 23 years, do not compromise with the de facto situation and refuse to accept the division of the island. The letter also calls upon the governments of the permanent UN Security Council member countries to actively support efforts in finding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem and help restore the rule of law on the island.
