[01] We remain positive for a solution, President Clerides says

Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus is at a crucial crossroads but despite the difficulties that lie ahead, we are determined to remain positive and proceed with UN-led direct talks hoping for a solution to the protracted Cyprus problem.

This was stressed today by President Glafcos Clerides speaking at a commemoration service for the 20th anniversary of the death of first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III.

Noting the difficulties that lie ahead, President Clerides expressed his government's determination to hold a positive stance in international efforts to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He said the Greek Cypriot side will show the same positive attitude at the second round of direct talks, scheduled to take place in Switzerland, August 11-16, it showed during the first round of negotiations in Troutbeck, New York, pointing out, however, that "we will not accept just any solution" to the Cyprus problem.

Citing earlier statements by the late Archbishop Makarios, Clerides said "we know that the solution to the Cyprus problem will be a compromise, but we will not accept a compromise that threatens the independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus."
