[01] Cyprus football clubs advance in respective competitions

Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) -- Anorthosis' 1 - 1 away draw yesterday with Lithuanian club Kareda Siauliai in the second leg of their European Champions' League qualifying tie vaulted the Cyprus champions into the next round of the competition with an impressive 4 - 1 aggregate score.

Not to be outdone, Apollonas delivered yesterday a 3 - 0 drubbing at home to Finnish club Mypa-47 Anjalankoski to put them through to the next round of the UEFA Cup competition with an identical aggregate score.

Anorthosis took the wind out of the Lithuanian champions' sails early when Vesco Michailovic capitalised on a huge blunder by the Lithuanian goalkeeper in the 17th minute to stroke the ball into a wide open goal.

The Lithuanians never quite recovered from the early setback, even though they managed to equalise seven minutes later.

Apollonas clinched advancing to the next round of the UEFA Cup competition with an attacking flurry in the first ten minutes at the start of the second half, scoring twice to put the game away for good.

Goals by Nebojasa Mladenovic, Angelos Tsolakis and Charalambos Pittas secured the victory for their club, while the Finish side could not find an answer to Apollonas' offensive onslaught.

Anorthosis meet Lierske SK of Belgium in the preliminary round of the Champions' League competition in two week's time.

Apollonas will find out their opponents tomorrow when the UEFA Cup draw takes place.

[02] Cypriot jailed for infecting British lover with HIV

Larnaca, Jul 31 (CNA) -- A Greek Cypriot fisherman was today sentenced to 15 months in prison for willfully infecting his former British lover with the virus that can lead to AIDS.

Pavlos Georgiou, 40, from the southeastern coastal resort of Ayia Napa, was handed down the sentence for passing on the AIDS virus to 45-year-old British divorcee, Jeanette Pink, during a two-year love affair that began on the island in 1994.

[03] Cyprus economy compares favourably with Europe

Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) -- Cyprus' growth rate could be lower than in the past, but its economy is strong enough, and compares favourably to that of certain European countries, which present a lower growth rate, Finance Minister, Christodoulos Christodoulou, said today.

Speaking to the press, just before a cabinet meeting, Christodoulou noted that according to recent data, despite last year's negative climate following demarcation line incidents and drought, the performance of the island's economy is satisfactory.

Christodoulou said Cyprus' growth rate is between 1,5 and 2 per cent, which is considered satisfactory in Europe, as last year's average growth rate in the European Union member-states was 1,5 per cent.

[04] Fisherman gets 15 months in jail for passing on AIDS virus

Larnaca, Jul 31 (CNA) -- A Greek Cypriot fisherman was today sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for negligently transmitting the virus that causes AIDS to a British woman.

Pavlos Georgiou, 40, from the southeastern coastal resort of Ayia Napa, was handed down the sentence for infecting divorcee Janette Pink, 45, from Basildon, Essex, during a two-year love affair that began on the island in January, 1994.

"This case was so severe that even the maximum penalty as provided by law is evidently inadequate," Famagusta District Court Judge Antonis Liatsos told Georgiou when passing sentence.

"He is tragically condemned and it would be expected he would have tried to avoid giving others the same condition... without telling her, he was ejaculating death in her for months," the Judge added.

Immediately after sentencing, a subdued Georgiou was whisked away to prison by police.

"He has actually accepted it," his twin brother Petros said of the sentence.

Georgiou, a father of four, whose wife Martha died of AIDS-related illnesses in 1994, was found guilty on Tuesday of repeated sexual contact with Pink without telling her of his condition.

He was charged under a 50-year-old British colonial law enacted to check the spread of cholera and typhoid.

Under the law, he had faced a maximum sentence of two years in jail, a 1,500 Cyprus pound (2,770 US dollar) fine, or both.

During the landmark three-month trial, Georgiou had denied Pink's accusation that he lied to her about having the disease and had maintained that Pink was fully aware of his condition during their affair.

Georgiou admitted he had unprotected sex only once with Pink when they were both drunk and this, he said, happened when Pink took the condom off him.

Judge Liatsos on Tuesday ruled Georgiou's testimony as "utterly unreliable" and that he had "too many contradictions in his statements".

Pink, a mother of two, found out she was HIV-positive in October, 1994, but chose to stay with Georgiou until July 1996 when she developed full- blown AIDS.

She then returned to England for medical treatment and decided to report Georgiou to the Cypriot authorities.

    [05] Earth tremour in Larnaca

Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) -- An earth tremour measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, was felt this morning at the southeastern coastal town of Larnaca. No injuries or damage were reported.

According to the Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, the epicentre was in the sea area, seven kilometres south of Larnaca.

People in Larnaca and the surrounding villages, as well as residents in tall buildings in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, felt the earth tremour.

Yesterday, another earth tremour was slightly felt in the Paphos area, in the island's western part, around noon, measuring 4.2 degrees on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was in the sea area, ten kilometres west of Paphos.

Cyprus is situated in the second major seismic zone in the world and in ancient times was reduced to rubble on a few occasions from disastrous earthquakes.

Last year, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richer scale shook the whole island, injuring around 50 persons and causing numerous damages in areas closest to the epicentre of the quake.

[06] AKEL condemns Jerusalem bomb attack

Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) -- Cyprus' leftwing party AKEL today condemned "with abhorrence" the bomb attack in a Jerusalem market yesterday which left 13 people dead and more than 150 wounded.

In a written statement, AKEL said this "criminal act torpedoes the efforts to move the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians towards a just solution to the problem."

AKEL said "such acts serve only those who oppose the continuation of the peace process and the implementation of the agreements, which have already been achieved."

The Cypriot political party expressed its sympathy for the loss of innocent lives and the hope that the peace process continues "to reach a just and final solution with the founding of an independent Palestinian state with Jerulalem as its capital".

In a message to Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus Semi Tzur, AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias expressed his party's sympathy for this "abhorrent crime".

The island's Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday issued a statement strongly condemning the Jerusalem bomb attack.

The statement said that Cyprus "is appalled" by the attack and that "such condemnable acts can never be justified to support any cause".

[07] Three new AIDS cases identified in July

Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) -- Three new cases of HIV infection have been identified in July by the island's health authorities.

Up until the end of July, 271 cases of HIV infection have been diagnosed, of which 158 are Cypriots and 113 are foreigners, a Ministry of Health press release said today.

Four-fifths of Cypriots infected with HIV are between the ages of 20 and 40.

Of the 158 Cypriot persons infected with HIV, 134 are men and 24 are women.

Almost all Cypriots diagnosed with HIV during the last four years, were infected with the virus in Cyprus. CNA/MH/GP/1997
