[02] Political leaders agree on participation in Cyprus peace talks

Speaking after an afternoon session of the National Council, Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, said all party leaders put forward their views on a revised document presented to the two sides by Diego Cordovez, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus question, during the first round of direct talks, held at Troutbeck, New York, between July 9 and 12.

The top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus question, made up of the five parliamentary parties, convened today for six hours to discuss latest developments on the Cyprus problem, in view of the second round of Cyprus peace talks.

For the first time, two small parties not represented in the Parliament, the Liberal party and New Horizons movement, took part in a National Council meeting.

Christofides said "political leaders have concluded their positions (on the document)" and added they will meet again next Friday, August 1, "for an in-depth discussion on all issues."

"No-one disputed the need for President Clerides to attend the Switzerland second round of negotiations," the Spokesman said.

He added the parties "expressed their positions on the UN document in all seriousness" but noted "no decision was taken on specific aspects."

The Spokesman said some parties have handed in written proposals on the Cordovez document, while other will do so before the next meeting of the National Council.

He said President Clerides listened to the party leaders' views and will take them into consideration when he will be taking his decisions on how to handle efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

Referring to a visit to Athens tomorrow by Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, and Attorney General, Alecos Markides, who is also one of the President's advisors in the negotiations, the Spokesman said they "will brief the Greek government on the meeting of the National Council and on issues regarding our stance during the second round of direct talks."

He said they will also discuss results of the first round of the face- to-face talks, the views expressed during the National Council meeting, as well as an illegal visit to Cyprus by Turkish Deputy Premier, Bulent Ecevit, on Sunday July 20, and a joint declaration issued with Denktash for partial integration of the island's Turkish-occupied part.

The joint declaration outlines steps towards the partial integration of the areas of the Republic occupied by Turkey since it invaded the island in 1974, in economic and financial areas and partnership in the fields of security, defence and foreign policy.

Christofides noted that the government has already made an official protest to the UN on this joint declaration, as well as to other international bodies, which he did not name.
