[03] Cyprus and Yugoslavia sign memorandum

Nicosia, Jul 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Yugoslavia signed here Thursday a cooperation memorandum in the fields of social insurance and the training of new scientists.

The memorandum was signed by Labour and Social Insurance Minister, Andreas Moushoutas, and Yugoslav Health, Labour and Social Welfare Minister, Miroslav Ivanisevic.

Moushoutas said the memorandum establishes the framework through which bilateral relations can continue to be improved and reflects the strong relations of the peoples of Cyprus and Yugoslavia.

The Cypriot minister added that they decided to broaden their cooperation to cover other fields and thanked his counterpart for Yugoslavia's help to the people of Cyprus, even before the island's independence, in 1960.

On his part, Ivanisevic expressed appreciation to the government and the people of Cyprus for what he described as an "excellent attitude" at the time when sanctions were imposed against his country and for the humanitarian help Cyprus offered Yugoslavia.

During his stay, Ivanisevic also signed an agreement of cooperation in the health field.

He departs for Yugoslavia on Saturday, July 12.

    [04] Police arrests Greenpeace demonstrators

Nicosia, Jul 10 (CNA) -- Eight members of the international environmental organisation Greenpeace were arrested here this morning during a protest against what they describes as the government's failure to declare the undeveloped western Akamas peninsula into a national park.

A group of 15 environmentalists, from local groups and members of Greenpeace ship "SV Sirius" crew, symbolically chained themselves Thursday morning to the entrance railings of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment.

They refused repeated police exhortation to leave peacefully and anti- riot police squad removed them, arresting eight persons.

A police spokesperson told CNA all eight protestors arrested are foreigners, from Greece, Malta, Italy, the Netherlands and the US.

They are likely to be let free tomorrow, after being accused of rioting and trespassing, the police said.

Executive Director of Greenpeace Mediterranean Office, Mario Damato said the group was protesting the government's "broken promises" to declare the Akamas peninsula a national park.

Earlier this week, Greenpeace had criticized the government for its policy concerning the environmentally sensitive Akamas area, in the western tip of the island, unique for its flora and fauna.

The Greenpeace ship "SV Sirius", had docked last Monday in the southwestern port of Limassol, as part of its campaign to encourage the use of solar energy, and is now halfway through its 1997 Mediterranean campaign tour.

Following a lecture organised in cooperation with the Cyprus Centre of Study in the Eastern Mediterranean on its campaign, Greenpeace, in cooperation with the Cyprus College Ecology Club, is organising tonight a discussion on "Solar Energy-Perspectives and Applications".

[05] British envoy welcomes Greco-turkish agreement

London, Jul 10 (CNA) -- Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, welcomed wholeheartedly the agreement reached by Greece and Turkey, noting "it is a source of encouragement for those working on the Cyprus problem".

Hannay was speaking to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, before his departure for the US to represent Britain in the UN sponsored direct talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, taking place in Troutbeck, Amenia, north of New York City.

Sir David, expected this afternoon in New York, described his role and that of US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke, as that of a "facilitator" to efforts for a Cyprus solution.

"We are supportive, we are part of a concerted effort, to support the UN. But this will depend on how the negotiating process will develop," he said.

The British diplomat added he doubted whether the leaders of the two communities themselves know how it will develop.

"The important thing is to take this opportunity, the first in five years", he stressed.
