0945:CYPPRESS:01[01] Taxi drivers suspend strike measuresNicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- Access to and from the island's two main airports, Larnaca and Paphos, has been restored after taxi drivers ended on Saturday their two-day old strike protesting a proposed government plan to grant extra taxi licences to some 250 taxi drivers.The decision to lift completely the airport blockage was taken "as a good will measure" and following assurances that their demands will be given "serious consideration." Kypros Andreou, chairman of the Cyprus Union of Taxi Drivers, has said the Union demands by urban taxi drivers will be met in a satisfactory manner. Taxi drivers have had consultations with Ministers responsible for transport and trade as well as several deputies. On Saturday, Union members met House President Spyros Kyprianou to discuss with him their problems. The airport blockade, in place since Friday lunchtime, was partially lifted in the early hours of Saturday morning. The blockade at Paphos airport, on the western coast, was lifted on Saturday afternoon and at Larnaca, on the southern coast, in the evening. CNA MM/EC/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1155:CYPPRESS:02[02] President, former POW, calls for justice in CyprusPaphos, Jun 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus is still awaiting to be vindicated for its contribution to the fight against the Axis forces in the Second World War and will continue to struggle for justice and the prevalence of the rule of law throughout its territory, part of which has been under Turkish occupation since 1974, President Glafcos Clerides said here today."We deeply regret that humanity has not managed to render into reality the vision for a new world order based on a moral code of conduct and the rule of law, in conditions of social justice, prosperity and stable peace," President Clerides, a former prisoner of war, said. Speaking at the inauguration of a memorial commemorating the sacrifice of Paphos war veterans, he said "we shall continue to achieve justice for all the people of this island, justice founded on the same principles and values for which the Allies fought in the World War II." Admitting the road to justice is "difficult", the President said "I am in no doubt that we shall survive and achieve this objective to have the principles of freedom and justice prevail." More than 33,000 Cypriots served on different fronts under the British Allied forces during the War, many of them died in the fighting and are buried in military cemeteries in 15 countries. Cyprus was at the time of the War a British colony and gained its independence in 1960. President Clerides joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and as an RAF pilot he was shot down over Germany in 1942 and taken prisoner until the end of the war.
