[01] Harriman estate widely rumoured locale for Cyprus talks

United Nations, Jun 12 (CNA) -- The precise place where UN-led direct talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will be held will not be disclosed until shortly before the meeting begins, UN Spokesman Fred Eckhard has said.

Averell Harriman estate is, however, the locale widely rumoured to be the place chosen.

The secluded estate is some 50 miles north of New York, and comprising hundreds of acres, has been converted into two conference centres with accommodation facilities.

Averell Harriman was a distinguished investment banker and diplomat, who served as advisor to every US President from Franklin Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter.

He also served as Ambassador to Moscow during World War II and was European Administrator of the post-war Marshall Plan.

Harriman, who was perhaps best known as a negotiator was chiefly responsible of concluding the Test Ban Treaty with the former Soviet Union in 1963 and US Emissary to the Paris peace talks on Vietnam in 1968.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's invitations were delivered yesterday to President Clerides and Denktash by UN Resident Representative Gustave Feissel.

President Clerides disclosed that the first round of face-to-face talks will take place between July 9 - 13.

The UN chief will host a dinner for President Clerides and Denktash on the eve of the talks, July 8.

"We greatly appreciate the support of Russia in our efforts to reunify Cyprus on the basis of UN resolutions and the principles of international law and we trust that this valuable support will continue," the Cypriot President said.

He wished Yeltsin "good health and well-being" and the "friendly people of Russia constant progress and prosperity".

President Clerides attended today a reception given at the Russian Embassy in Nicosia on the occasion.
