[01] S-300 will arrive in Cyprus unless solution is reached

Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides pointed out to his US counterpart Madeleine Albright that the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles purchased from Russia will come to the island unless a solution to the Cyprus problem is found.

Kasoulides was speaking at Larnaca Airport, on his return from Washington where he held talks with Albright.

He confirmed that the question of the Russian S-300 surface-to-air missiles was raised at the Washington meeting on Friday.

Kasoulides said he had told Albright the missiles would arrive as scheduled unless the Cyprus problem is solved or an agreement on the island's demilitarisation is reached, or such progress is made in efforts towards a solution to meet the security needs of the Greek Cypriots.

The Cypriot Minister dismissed domestic criticism against statements he made while in the US that the Greek Cypriot side would negotiate in a spirit of "give and take".

He said the Greek Cypriot side had already made compromises, especially regarding the security issue so as to satisfy both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash are expected to be invited for direct talks by the UN Secretary- General early in July near New York.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

[03] British envoy on Cyprus arrives

Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- British Representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, arrived today in Cyprus for talks with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

The British envoy's trip to the region takes place one month ahead of the UN-sponsored direct talks between President Clerides and Denktash scheduled to start on July 9, near New York.

Speaking at Larnaca International Airport, Sir David said there was common ground for the start of direct talks. He did not elaborate.

He described as positive the fact that both sides in Cyprus (Greek and Turkish Cypriot) were seeking the establishment of a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus.

On Monday, Sir David will meet President Clerides and on Tuesday he will cross into the Turkish-occupied areas to meet Denktash.

During his three-day stay, the British diplomat will also have meetings with Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, US Ambassador to Cyprus, Kenneth Brill, and UN Resident Representative, Gustave Feissel.

On Wednesday morning, Hannay will leave for Athens for talks with Greek government officials. After Athens, he will travel to Ankara.

    [04] New DISY leadership elected

Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- Nicos Anastasiades was today elected new leader of the ruling right-wing Democratic Rally (DISY) party to replace Yiannakis Matsis, who decided to step down earlier this year.

Anastasiades was elected by 2.943 votes or 68,88 per cent as against 1.330 or 31,13 per cent received by the other candidate Demetris Syllouris.

Anastasiades, a 51-year old lawyer from Pera-Pedi village, has been repeatedly elected MP for Limassol District since 1981. He has also served as Deputy President of the party and parliamentary spokesman.

Speaking shortly before the announcement of the final results, Anastasiades stressed the need for unity in the party and said that "as from tomorrow we start the hard work for reorganisation and modernisation in order to achieve our party's objectives."

On his part, Syllouris congratulated the new party leader, thanked all those who supported him and stressed the need for unity in the party.

Former DISY leader, Yianakis Matsis, said he was proud because elections ran smoothly, adding that he will continue to serve both the party and the country as an MP.

"The difficult times Cyprus is going through demand that we should put behind us inter-party differences and concentrate our efforts on the Cyprus problem", he said.

Some 4.600 DISY members took part in the elections for the party's new leadership.

Ouranios Ioannides was elected First Vice-President and Sophocles Hadjiyiannis as Second Vice-President. Eleni Vrahimi was elected General Secretary.

For the post of General Organiser, Antonis Karas is so far ahead from the other candidate, Andreas Tsangarides.

Panayiotis Demetriou was elected unopposed to the post of Deputy President.

Three candidates, Rikkos Erotocritou, Isidoros Makrides and Christos Rotsas, were elected members of DISY's Political Bureau.
