[01] Communist leader wants more Russian involvement

Speaking after a meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Zyuganov expressed satisfaction with President Clerides' "optimism", as he described it, concerning developments in the Cyprus problem.

He reaffirmed his country's support for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem which would safeguard the Republic's territorial integrity and respect for human rights.

Asked to comment on a military agreement between Turkey and Israel, the Communist leader said it would only lead to escalation of tensions in the area.

Russia together with Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and European countries should work towards defusing tension.

Zyuganov, who is on a two-day visit to Cyprus at the invitation of leftwing AKEL General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, had meetings yesterday with House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou and the AKEL leader.

Speaking after his meeting with Kyprianou, the Russian Communist leader described relations between the two countries as "very important", expressing the desire to boost them even further.

On his part, Kyprianou, described the meeting as "very interesting" and added that the two countries share similar concerns and objectives, including the need for peace and security in the region.

"We also had the chance to stress the great importance we place on Russian involvement in efforts for a Cyprus settlement, within the framework of the UN Security Council", Kyprianou, added.

The firm support of KPRF for Cyprus' struggle for justice was also stressed by Christofias, who described Zyuganov's visit as a proof of the traditionally friendly relations between the two communist parties.

The Russian politician said after meeting Christofias that his party fully backed efforts for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem, envisaging for an independent and demilitarised federal state with a single sovereignty.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

[02] Nicosia clubs clash in Cyprus Cup final

Police have announced that about 500 policemen will be on duty tonight to prevent crowd trouble.

This is the second time in the Cup history that the two Nicosia teams clash in the final game. The first was in 1969, when APOEL beat Omonia 1-0.

APOEL and Omonia have dominated the Cup competition. APOEL have won the competition a record 15 times, appearing in 23 final games.

Omonia won the Cup 10 times having appeared in 14 finals. Omonia won the cup four consecutive years from 1980 to 1983.

APOEL won the Cup in the last two seasons while Omonia won the Cup for the last time in 1994.

The match kicks off at 2000 local time (1700 GMT).
