The President, it adds, is expected to return to his normal duties tomorrow. He is expected to leave Hospital early this afternoon. President Clerides has felt rather unwell in the past couple of days and Monday evening he was seen by his doctors who recommended he be admitted to hospital for medical tests. The doctors recommended that the President should not travel to China, where he is scheduled to pay an official visit, starting this weekend. CNA MM/GP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1230:CYPPRESS:03[03] President to leave hospital todayNicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides will be discharged from Nicosia General Hospital later today, after undergoing medical tests because of minor chest pains, Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, said Tuesday. He added the President will return to his office tomorrow and will go follow the day's scheduled programme. President Clerides had been feeling minor chest pains for the past two days, and after examining him yesterday, doctors decided he should be admitted to hospital early this morning for a catheterization and angiograph, Christofides said. "The results of the examinations are considered satisfactory and the President will return to his duties as from tomorrow," a medical report, signed by four doctors and read to the press, by the Spokesman said. Christofides said doctors have recommended that the President should take things easy "for at least a week", but noted Clerides will see UN Under Secretary-General, Sir Kieran Prendergast (who arrives here Wednesday) and the Canadian special representative on Cyprus, Michael Bell." "These meetings will not be tiring for the President," he added. House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, Greek ambassador to Nicosia, Alexandros Sandis, Ministers, party leaders and other officials rushed to the Nicosia General Hospital this morning, as soon as it was made known that the President was admitted. Initial reports did not clarify that Clerides' medical tests had been arranged Monday afternoon, and many people were alarmed by the news that the President was in hospital. The Spokesman, who also visited the President in hospital, said Clerides is in high spirits and was joking with his visitors. Replying to questions about the President's health, Christofides said the doctors have established "changes in coronary vessels, considered of no medical importance and normal, for a person of his age." He described the 78-year-old President's health as "excellent" and noted President Clerides trusts his doctors who have said there is no need for him to undergo any other medical examinations, nor should he go abroad for more tests. However, the Spokesman said doctors recommended that President Clerides' official visit to China, should be cancelled (he was to leave May 16) as it would be too tiring. CNA MA/MM/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1300:CYPPRESS:04[04] EU interested, cautious on CyprusNicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The European Union (EU) has an interest in the development of the on-going UN-led proximity talks between the Greek and Turkish sides in Cyprus, and hopes direct negotiations will begin in June or July."We are cautious when we approach the whole problem of Cyprus, and have an interest as far as the Union is concerned in the development of negotiations that are going on," Count Jan d' Ansembourg, of the EU Dutch presidency said, after meeting Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, here Tuesday. Speaking to the press, he also expressed EU hope that direct negotiations between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash "will start at the end of June or beginning of July." UN Resident Representative, Gustave Feissel, has been holding separate meetings with President Clerides and Denktash, preparing the ground for face-to-face talks. "We have been discussing the problems both sides have... and we will take all that into account in our evaluation, as far as the accession talks with Cyprus are concerned," he added. The Count confirmed accession negotiations will begin with Cyprus six months after the Intergovernmental Conference, and said that "we expect that these negotiations will start beginning of 1998." "That is the main gist of our discussions," he added. The Dutch presidency official, accompanied by the Presidency representative for the Cyprus problem, Irish ambassador Kester Heaslip, was scheduled to meet President Clerides, but the appointment was cancelled because the President was admitted to hospital for cardiac examinations. He will be discharged in the afternoon. The two EU officials, who are leaving Cyprus later today, have met Feissel and Denktash, US ambassador Kenneth Brill, and are due to meet EU ambassadors resident in Cyprus. Asked if he has extended an invitation to President Glafcos Clerides to Amsterdam after the EU summit, Jan d' Ansembourg said he expects "that Cyprus will be invited, but there have been no official invitations issued yet." "Such summits, where heads of state have to take important decisions and negotiations always last for ever, it is not a very good solution to have non-members waiting somewhere in the wings for negotiations to finish and then inform them," he noted. The Dutch representative said these countries (11 applicant countries and Turkey) will be invited after the Amsterdam summit to give them more time for a proper briefing.
