1540:CYPPRESS:01[01] Government satisfied with Russian responseNicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expressed today its satisfaction with the Russian government's response to last week's visit, by Russian parliamentarians, to Cyprus' Turkish-occupied areas.Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, stressed the government is particularly satisfied with "the reference to the fact that the Russian Federation has never recognised nor does it recognise the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime, recognised by no other state than Turkey". A Russian Foreign Ministry official said Tuesday a number of Russian MPs visited the illegal occupation regime in their personal capacity and "without any authorisation by State Duma authorities." The Russian official added that statements made by the MPs while in the occupied areas "reflect exclusively their personal views". Christofides also singled out part of the Russian official's statement that "it is essential for all Russian Federation members and Russian representatives to faithfully abide by the Russian Federation's international obligations, and not to resort to actions which go against the spirit and content of UN Security Council resolutions". "The Russian Federation abides unwaveringly by the provisions of these UN resolutions," the Russian official added. CNA AP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1650:CYPPRESS:03[03] Regional manoeuvres - Air space not likely to be violatedNicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Israel has informed the government of the Republic that it will probably conduct rescue manoeuvres between its armed forces and the Turkish military, Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, has said.He also noted that US participation in these exercises has not been confirmed. "The information we have points to the fact that rescue exercises are likely to take place between the Israeli and the Turkish military with a limited number of aircraft and naval forces," Kasoulides told the press here today. These exercises, he explained, are not scheduled for the near future. "The US are not sure yet if they will participate in these manoeuvres," the Foreign Minister said. Replying to questions, Kasoulides said he "expressed the government's concern that its sovereign air space should not be violated under any circumstances", at yesterday's meeting in Athens with Carey Cavanaugh, Director of the Office of Southern European Affairs at the US State Department. Asked if Cavanaugh has secured assurances from Ankara that Cyprus' air space will not be violated, Kasoulides replied "there are indications that our air space will not be violated by the Turkish air force" but refrained from further comment. The Minister underlined Cyprus' concerns because it has the responsibility for the safety of air traffic in FIR (Flight Information Region) Nicosia and "therefore it wishes to be informed if the region is going to be used by other countries." CNA MCH/MM/AP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1700:CYPPRESS:04[04] Cyprus envoys to visit islandNicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Representatives of foreign governments dealing with the Cyprus question are due to visit the island soon, in an apparent bid to press on with ongoing UN efforts for direct negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides."Britain, Canada and the European Union (EU) presidency envoys are expected to visit Cyprus soon," Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, announced here today. He also said France intends to appoint a special envoy for Cyprus and noted that "such appointments mark the special interest of European and other countries in the Cyprus question." "It is a particular honour for Cyprus to have a special representative for Cyprus appointed," Christofides said and added "we expect to see positive results." President Glafcos Clerides, he said, believes all special envoys for Cyprus should coordinate. Asked if this coordination exists, the Spokesman replied "this is a question of who can act as an umbrella of the team of envoys. The UN or the EU are probably the most suitable body." CNA MCH/MM/AP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1840:CYPPRESS:05[05] Clear US interest in CyprusNicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- The government considers that US interest in Cyprus in finding a solution to the protracted Cyprus question is obvious and has been evident in the recent meetings of officials from both countries."The US have reaffirmed their support for the UN in efforts to reach a settlement in Cyprus and their positive contribution, at all stages and on all levels, in the ongoing effort," Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, said here today. Speaking at his daily press briefing, Christofides said the government was satisfied with a proposed meeting between US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, and Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, scheduled for June 6, in Washington. Cristofides said June 6 "brings to mind the historic significance of this day, D-Day," when the Allies landed in Normandy, an event which marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War. The powerful nations around the globe, Christofides pointed out, "should remember Cyprus' contribution to democracy and freedom." "Cyprus has the indelible right to expect vindication of its struggle for freedom," he added. Asked how the US will engage themselves in the peace effort, the Spokesman said "the US are not going to abrogate procedures. On the contrary they will boost the UN effort with ideas and other special assistance the UN Secretary-General may request of them." Replying to questions, Christofides said US officials have expressed to President Glafcos Clerides and the Foreign Minister the view that the Turkish Cypriot side appears intransigent. "We expect the same conviction will be expressed and reaffirmed on June 6," he said. CNA MCH/MM/AP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2010:CYPPRESS:06[06] UN Under-Secretary General to visit CyprusNicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Sir Kieran Prendergast, UN Under-Secretary General, will visit Cyprus later this month as part of UN efforts to make headway in their bid to reach a negotiated settlement in the Cyprus question, UN sources have told CNA today."The visit is part of the UN effort to push for direct negotiations between the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities in Cyprus, " the same sources added. During his stay here, Sir Kieran will meet President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in an attempt to prepare the ground for face-to-face talks between the two men, the first in nearly three years. The May visit comes weeks ahead of a much anticipated direct meeting between President Clerides and Denktash, widely believed to take place in June, possibly in or around New York.
