[01] Canadian envoy on Cyprus to visit Cyprus

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- Newly-appointed Special Representative of Canada for Cyprus, Michael Bell, will pay his first familiarisation visit to the island, next week.

This was confirmed by Bell yesterday, during a meeting in Ottava with Cyprus High Commissioner to Canada, Andros Nicolaides. The two met after Nicolaides presented his credentials to Canada's Governor-General, Romeo LeBlanc.

Presenting his credentials, Nicolaides welcomed the appointment of Bell as Special Representative, noting that it indicates Canada's steady support to UN efforts towards a just solution of the Cyprus problem.

On his part, LeBlanc referred to traditional ties of friendship between the two countries, stressing that the appointment of a Special Representative for Cyprus is a reaffirmation of Canada's interest in a peaceful Cyprus settlement.

The Canadian envoy on Cyprus will come to Cyprus for his first visit, under his new capacity, on May 12, as part of a tour in the region.

Upon completion of his visit to Cyprus, Bell will then travel to Athens and Ankara for talks on Cyprus with the governments of Greece and Turkey, respectively.

Bell was officially appointed as Canada's Special Representative for Cyprus last April.

[02] Foreign Minister to meet American official

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides will discuss the Cyprus issue today with Director of Southern European Affairs at the State Department, Carey Cavanaugh.

The meeting was announced today by Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, who said Kasoulides and Cavanaugh are expected to meet in Athens "to exchange views".

The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation reported Kasoulides will meet Cavanaugh at Athens airport, on his way to Cyprus, from Strasbourg, later today.

The Spokesman said the US Ambassador to Nicosia, Kenneth Brill, requested a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides today, with whom he discussed the Kasoulides-Cavanaugh meeting.

However, he refrained from replying to questions regarding the issues which will be discussed between the Cyprus Foreign Minister and the American diplomat.

Replying to a question, Christofides said President Clerides and Brill did not discuss the issue of joint Israeli-Turkish -American military exercises, which, according to press reports, are scheduled to take place this summer.

He pointed out that this issue is still under discussion and no details are known.

Asked if the President requested that all legal procedures are adhered to, if the US takes part in military exercises in this region, Christofides said "it is understood that the American and Israeli planes will not violate Cyprus' air space."

He also said "there are indications that Turkey will not violate Cyprus' air space."
