[01] Communists to gather in Cyprus

Nicosia, Apr 24 (CNA) -- More than 30 communist and leftist parties from all over the world will gather in Cyprus next week for a two-day meeting on "The leftist movement's contemporary stance and the need to combat neo- liberalism in the new world order".

The meeting, to be held in the south eastern coastal town of Larnaca between May 3 and 4, is organised by the main opposition left-wing AKEL party, and will deal with ways to combat nationalism, chauvinism, racism and religious fundamentalism as neo-liberal trends in the new world order.

A party statement said the meeting is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Cyprus Communist Party (CCP) and AKEL, which emerged from the CCP after it was outlawed in 1941, following a British colonial order (Cyprus was then a British colony).

The meeting will be attended by high-ranking officials from 36 European, American, Asiatic and African parties, including 20 communist parties (from Russia, Cuba, France, Portugal, Greece, Sudan and Vietnam), and other leftwing parties.

A special session of the meeting will deal with the protracted Cyprus question and a resolution is expected to be adopted advocating a just, viable and lasting solution to the problem, the statement added.

    [03] Air transport committee decisions

Nicosia, Apr 24 (CNA) -- A ministerial committee on air transport has adopted several measures to boost air travel, including lower fares to specific destinations and certain perks for students and summer travellers.

The committee decided to allow charter flights from Israel (return flights from Haifa to Larnaca and Paphos) over the summer period, ending October this year, to increase the flow of tourists from Israel.

It also approved a proposal for revised prices offered by the national carrier, Cyprus Airways, for the summer season. The proposal covers special categories of air fares which will not affect the cost of tourist packages to Cyprus.

Students flying on extra return scheduled flights from Cyprus to Athens and Salonica at specific times of the year will pay reduced fares and can also participate in the "frequent flyer" programme.
