1315:CYPPRESS:01[01] CA's Dresden destination "a route to build on"by Katerina NicolaouDresden, Apr 17 (CNA) -- Dresden, the capital of Saxony in southeastern Germany, is just one of the new travel destinations offered by Cyprus Airways (CA).The Cyprus national carrier, celebrating 50 years of service this year, began round-trip flights to Dresden on March 30, and flies every Friday and Sunday. The inaugural flight took place on Friday, April 11. It was followed by a small ceremony at Dresden International Airport attended by Cyprus Airways Press and Public Relations Director, Tasos Angelis. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Cyprus Airways Sales Manager for Germany, Jeffrey Styles, predicted that Dresden would be a very "profitable route" for the airline. "We see it as a route to build on and we are already talking to smaller German regional airlines about using Dresden as a hub to bring people in to travel through Dresden towards points which Cyprus Airways and Eurocypria (CA' subsidiary company) don't serve at the moment out of Germany", Styles said. Asked whether interest has been shown by businessmen as well as tourists for CA routes to the Middle East, Styles said the Dresden route is indeed convenient for anyone wishing to travel to the Middle East and added the airline hopes to expand even further by next summer. "The great advantage is that people can fly straight south east whereas the only other options to go to the Middle East was to go to Frankfurt or Hamburg first which meant that you had to fly for an hour in the wrong direction before you start going to where you want to go," he noted. Styles stressed that travellers flying to or from Prague would be serviced by the Dresden route, since the Czech capital is only a two-hour drive away from the German city. In his remarks, Dresden Airport Managing Director, Axel Bertram, said that he was very pleased to have Cyprus Airways as a new customer. "The Saxony market is a very touristic market so we are convinced that you will be very successful in transporting Saxony travellers to this beautiful island of Cyprus", Bertram said. Spokesman for the Saxony Economics and Labour Ministry, Mathias Richter, stressed that there is a good opportunity now for trade between Cyprus and Saxony. "Cyprus will become the passage for exports from Germany to the Middle East," Richter noted. Travellers to Dresden will have an incredible array of things to see and do. The various cultural activities, lively nightlife, baroque architecture, superb art galleries and scrumptious cuisine, attract thousands of visitors every year. The beautiful Saxon countryside is easily accessible from the city. One of the most pleasant ways of viewing it is from the deck of a traditional paddle steamer as it cruises down the Elbe towards Meissen, the centre of porcelain manufacturing. It is worth noting that Dresden was rebuilt from scratch after the city was totally destroyed during the Second World War's worst bombardments on the night of February 13, 1945.
