1215:CYPPRESS:01[01] President Clerides proposes ideas on goodwill gesturesNicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus' President, Glafcos Clerides, has provided UN Resident Representative, Gustave Feissel, with some ideas on the promotion of exchanges between Greek and Turkish Cypriot professional and scientific bodies.President Clerides told the press Saturday he had proposed several ideas of such exchanges within the framework of "gestures of goodwill" of the ongoing UN-led proximity talks between the two sides. However, he noted "none of these have been specified yet." The President said the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, had also provided Feissel with several ideas, noting that it is up to the UN official to decide on the next step. The UN believe that face-to-face talks between President Clerides and Denktash could begin before June 1997, in a bid to step up efforts for a comprehensive Cyprus settlement. Feissel told the press earlier this week that during his bi-weekly meetings with President Clerides and Denktash, "gestures of goodwill" are being discussed, noting there had to be give-and-take in everything. The UN resident representative said he would submit a report to UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, on the situation in Cyprus with an assessment of his talks with the two leaders. Feissel said the report would be submitted prior to Annan's meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader in Geneva, next Wednesday.
