1200:CYPPRESS:01[01] Sport: Cyprus - Russia 1-1Nicosia, Mar 30 (CNA) -- Cyprus' national soccer team drew 1-1 with Russia, in a World Cup 1998 Group 5 qualifier.The match took place yesterday afternoon at Paralimni stadium in southeastern Cyprus. The Cypriot team opened the score in the 31st minute and Russia equalised one minute later. Both teams missed a number of fine chances to double their goals. Cyprus netted through a header by Sinisa Gogic while Russia scored with Igor Simutenkov. Russia leads Group 5 with eight points in four games followed by Israel with seven points in three games, Bulgaria with six points in three games, Cyprus with four points in four games and Luxembourg with no points in three games. Meanwhile, the Russian Under-21 team thrashed the Cyprus team 4-0 for the preliminary round of the UEFA Cup, yesterday, at the PAEEK stadium in Nicosia. CNA/GP/1997 ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1435:CYPPRESS:02[02] Turkish recalcitrance must yield, says Greek Defence MinisterNicosia, Mar 30 (CNA) -- Turkey is partaking in negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem to entrench its occupation of 37 per cent of the island and to put the free areas of the Republic under its political thumb, Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos has said.In an interview with the Greek Cypriot weekly, "Ta Nea" (The News), Tsohatzopoulos also said the Greek side does not have a serious reason to believe Turkey is sincere in current efforts for a solution. "We have every reason to believe that Turkey has entered into negotiations with the exclusive purpose of not only entrenching its occupation, but also to finally put the rest of Cyprus under Turkish political control through a spurious solution," said Tsohatzopoulos. He added that "after 23 years of Turkish occupation and intransigence in efforts to find a just solution in Cyprus, the Greek side has no serious reason to believe Ankara has changed its stance." Tsohatzopoulos added that as long as part of the island remains under Turkish occupation, Cyprus will continue to be a major international problem that must be solved according to international law. He also reiterated that the Greek side believes in a peaceful solution to the Cyprus question. "The resolution of the Cyprus problem according to the principles of international law and the UN, constitutes a decisive pre-condition for the normalisation of Greco-Turkish relations," he stressed. The Greek Defence Minister affirmed that as long as Turkish recalcitrance continues, the close defence ties between Greece and Cyprus will be beefed up to counterbalance the presence of 35.000 heavily armed Turkish troops in occupied Cyprus. "The Greek government has undertook the political responsibility to guarantee the security of the island, so that the free areas of the Republic are not under the constant threat of a new military action by Ankara," Tsohatzopoulos said. He warned that any "hot military incident" created by Turkey in Cyprus will automatically translate into the mobilisation of Greek forces along the entire Cyprus-Aegean front. "Turkey is obliged to take into consideration that the geographical distance between Greece and Cyprus no longer poses a problem for Greece to reliably fulfil its defence obligations," Tsohatzopoulos said. He added the Greek side's firm stance is that security guarantees for both the Greek and Turkish communities on the island can be had through the complete demilitarisation of the island, within an overall solution to the Cyprus problem. "If Turkey has the political will to accept this, we are ready to work constructively towards this direction, but this is impossible before a Cyprus solution can be found," the Greek Defence Minister said. CNA MH/MA/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1520:CYPPRESS:03[03] Greece and Cyprus to boost business in the BalkansNicosia, Mar 30 (CNA) -- Companies of Greek and Cypriot ownership can penetrate the Balkan markets and can avoid double taxation as a result of agreements signed between Cyprus and numerous eastern European countries.This was underlined by Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Vasilis Rologis, in statements made yesterday in view of the Greece-Cyprus Business Symposium, beginning in Athens Monday. Rologis said agreements signed with countries, including Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Serbia, will allow Greek and Cypriot-owned companies to avoid double taxation once they have entered the Balkan market. The Symposium, organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Union of Chambers in Greece, will be addressed by Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Kyriakos Christofi who will speak on "Cyprus as a business centre in the Middle East and as a transit point for trade transactions." Cyprus Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou and his Greek counterpart, George Papantoniou, will also speak at the Symposium. About 400 delegates from Greece and Cyprus will study ways of boosting cooperation with Black Sea, Balkan and Middle Eastern countries.
