[01] UN envoy looks for substance

Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- Setting dates for meetings is easy but actually getting somewhere is the real issue, UN Resident Representative in Cyprus, Gustave Feissel said today after another round of proximity talks.

Feissel met today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, in his bid to get President Clerides and occupation regime leader, Rauf Denktash together to tackle substantial issues in the Cyprus problem.

"Getting the two people together is the easy part. Making sure that something happens when they get together is the more difficult part," Feissel said.

The UN envoy said he and President Clerides talked about ways of finding common ground between the two communities on the island that would show mutual good will.

"We talked about various gestures, and (President Clerides and Denktash) had ideas on certain possible gestures which they thought might hit the spot in their community if the other side did something along those lines," Feissel said.

He added the talks aim at an overall solution which would be abetted by fostering trust through mutual gestures of good will.

"We all agree that our main effort, which is to move towards an overall settlement, could be helped by improving the atmosphere and the feelings of the two communities and this could be done by each community making certain gestures which are positive towards the other community", the UN envoy noted.

Feissel will meet with Denktash tomorrow and with President Clerides again on Friday.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

    [03] Moderate quake hits Cyprus

Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- A quake, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, was felt in the island's southern coastal town of Limassol.

The Geological Survey Department announced the quake's epicentre was around 10 kilometres in the sea area, south of Limassol.

It said the quake was of moderate magnitude and is part of the normal seismic activity in the Cyprus area.

A strong earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook Cyprus in October 1996.
