1000:CYPPRESS:01[01] Protest at British Sovereign BaseNicosia, Mar 24 (CNA) -- A group of people demanded the release of a 17- year-old Greek Cypriot being held by British Sovereign Area (SBA) police in Dhekelia. Demonstrators pelted the police station with rocks and burned tyres.About 50 protestors gathered outside the SBA police station yesterday afternoon and began throwing stones and burning car tyres, damaging some of the police station's windows. No one was injured during the protest and SBA police did not move in against the demonstrators but diverted traffic away from the protest. The demonstrators have been gathering outside Dhekelia police headquarters for the past three days, demanding the immediate release of Yiorgos Kyriakou, who was sentenced for three months by an SBA court for traffic violations. Independent MP, Marios Matsakis, who has been with protestors from the start of the demonstrations, told CNA yesterday the protest is being waged on behalf of all Cypriot citizens, who are "arrested illegally and convicted by the illegal SBA courts". In a written press release, SBA spokesman Mervyn Wynne Jones said the demonstrators engaged in "unacceptable behaviour" and that they "represent no one but themselves". The youth's father, Dimitris Kyriakou, told CNA that he and his family will not take part in the protest, after assurances he received that his son would be released very soon. Wynne Jones said SBA Administrator, Air Vice-Marshal Peter Millar, is still considering an appeal for clemency from Yiorgos Kyriakou "in light of his good behaviour" and a social welfare report due this week. Britain has retained two sovereign military bases on the island under the 1960 treaty of establishment of the Cyprus Republic. CNA KN/MH/GP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1100:CYPPRESS:02[02] Council of Europe adopts vaccination report by Cypriot MPNicosia, Mar 24 (CNA) -- Council of Europe parliamentarians unanimously adopted a report by Cypriot MP, Dr. Doros Christodoulides, on the need for large-scale vaccinations by European countries to avoid the possible return of life-threatening diseases.Meeting at the Parliamentary Assembly's Standing Committee in Strasbourg last week, parliamentarians urged the Council's 40-member countries to inject more resources into public vaccination programmes and to guarantee funding to bodies such as the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, who carry them out. "The recommendations will be implemented in the Council's member countries through their national parliaments," Christodoulides told CNA Monday. The Cypriot MP told Council parliamentarians that diseases once thought to be the scourges of the past could make a comeback if countries ignore warnings. Christodoulides said diphtheria, a disease thought to have been wiped out long ago, had reached epic proportions in central and eastern Europe, with tens of thousands of cases reported since 1990. He noted that ease of travel meant such diseases were spread more easily and wide-scale vaccination is the only guarantee against epidemics. Acting on the report, the parliamentarians called for international coordination to wipe out the diphtheria epidemic and for an adequate supply of vaccines and trained medical staff. Christodoulides also recommended that Council of Europe member states sign the Council's Social Charter and Protocol 11, which refers to health matters.
