CNA MCH/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1630:CYPPRESS:02[02] Kyriakou: Number of liquidations and bankruptcies not alarmingNicosia, Mar 21 (CNA) -- The number of company liquidations and personal bankruptcies in Cyprus, is not considered "alarming", Registrar of Companies and Official Receiver, Maria Kyriakou, said today. There were 14 company liquidations from January 1 to March 6 1997, 122 in 1996, 83 in 1995 and 73 in 1994 while the number of bankruptcies for the same period was 45, 226, 234 and 188 respectively. Company liquidations show a constant increase from 1994 onwards, while the number of personal bankruptcies showed a drop, from 1995 to 1996. Speaking to CNA, Kyriakou said these numbers are considered acceptable and don't send an alarming message. "When a country suffers from an extraordinary number of bankruptcies and liquidations, then we can say that something is wrong, but this is not the case in Cyprus," Kyriakou noted. "These numbers must be examined in the context of the economy as a whole, because many liquidations and bankruptcies, may be the result of a simple transfer of economic activity, from one sector to another", she added. The UD President said the conference was a success and pointed that all trade unions from both sides of the divide agree that Cyprus must be reunited. "All trade unions agree the solution must be a federal one and that means we must all work to re-unite Cyprus within a federal framework as foreseen by the 1977-79 High Level Agreements between the two communities and relevant UN Security Council resolutions," Vassiliou said. Vassiliou added the trade unions "agree, support and affirm Cyprus' accession to the European Union as well as the need for accession". CNA GG/MH/MCH 1997 ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1855:CYPPRESS:04[04] Cyprus to submit recommendation on accession talks participationNicosia, Mar 21 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government will submit a recommendation to the European Union (EU) member states regarding a joint statement on EU- Cyprus membership talks. This was stated here today by Foreign Minister, Alecos Michaelides who said the Dutch EU Presidency's suggestion was sufficiently constructive and with some "slight adjustments, a way out will be found". The Cyprus-EU structured dialogue, scheduled to take place last February was postponed after the Council of Ministers failed to agree on a common position regarding Turkish Cypriot involvement in accession negotiations. Michaelides noted the reaffirmation of the recent informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, and the assurances he received during his recent tour of five European capitals that Cyprus-EU accession talks will begin six months after the end of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC). He also referred to the possibility that the EU may use Cyprus to exercise pressure Greece on the issue of the Financial Protocol providing for assistance to Turkey, calling this "illogical and unacceptable". "As events are unfolding, Greece is not at all to blame for this", Michaelides said. Regarding Turkish Cypriot involvement in the accession talks, the Foreign Minister echoed President Clerides' words that the doors are open for the Turkish Cypriots to follow the process. Michaelides said the negotiations are not secret and if they the Turkish Cypriots wish, they can follow along. He stressed however, negotiations will take place with the government of Cyprus and this must be clarified in the common statement. CNA AZK/KN/MH/MCH/1997 ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCYi1945:CYPPRESS:05[05] Protest over jailed teen in SBA DhekeliaNicosia, Mar 21 (CNA) -- Demonstrators protested outside the British Sovereign Military Bases (SBA) police station in Dhekelia today, demanding the release of a 17 year-old jailed for illegally riding his motorcycle on SBA territory.Yiorgos Kyriakou from the Turkish-occupied village of Achna, was handed a three-month prison sentence by the SBA court in November 1996. He was released on bail five days later pending his appeal of the conviction, which was rejected earlier this month. Demonstrators picketed the police station today, saying they will continue their protest until Kyriakou is released. Achna Mayor, Yiorgos Tsappis visited Dhekelia police headquarters to have the youth released, saying his violation was not so serious as to demand a three-month prison sentence, the severity of which provoked his family's anguish. Among the demonstrators were Kyriakou's parents and independent MP, Marios Matsakis, who visited the youth in jail earlier this morning. SBA Spokesman, Mervyn Wynne-Jones, told CNA Kyriakou was convicted on traffic offences stretching back to April 1996. Kyriakou, who has been serving his sentence since March 6, appealed for clemency directly to SBA Administrator, Air Vice-Marshal, Peter Millar, who has the legal authority to grant the clemency. "The appeal will be considered very carefully, pending the completion of a (SBA) social services report on Kyriakou," Jones said. The SBA spokesman said the 17 year-old is considered an adult by SBA law which "exactly mirrors", as he claimed, the laws of the Republic of Cyprus. "The charges (Kyriakou) faced are technically identical to those he would have faced in any other area of the Republic," Jones said. CNA MH/MCH/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2010:CYPPRESS:06[06] Attorney-General orders police to press charges in spy caseNicosia, Mar 21 (CNA) -- The Attorney-General's office instructed today the police to press charges in connection with a spy case against the Republic of Cyprus. Two Turks and a Turkish Cypriot are presently in police custody on suspicion of spying. The decision was taken at a meeting at the Attorney-General's office presided over by the Republic's top lawyer, Petros Clerides. Clerides avoided saying which one of the three suspects will be charged. He only said the investigation into the case is complete and instructions were given to press charges against those who have evidence amassed against them. One of the charges is for spying. The Republic's lawyer added that further evidence is being collected and did not discount the possibility of further arrests. Clerides also said famed Turkish Cypriot lawyer, Ali Nadal, will arrive from the Turkish-occupied areas to handle the three suspects' defence. He said further the Attorney-General's office will ensure that the Republic's interests are safeguarded, as well as those of the persons charged.
