[02] Bill on Cyprus to be tabled in House of Commons

London, Mar 11 (CNA) -- British Labour MP, Alan Meal will later today table in the House of Commons a bill on Cyprus with special reference to the question of persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Meale, along with his Labour colleagues Eddie O'Hara and Eric Clark, as well as Conservative MPs Ian Twinn and John Marshall, pledged last night their support to 70 Greek Cypriot women, who went to London to protest against the Turkish occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory and to demand the determination of the fate of persons missing since 1974.

It is the duty of Britain and the international community to assist efforts towards the resolution of this humanitarian issue concerning the missing persons, the British MPs stated.

Meanwhile, a five-member delegation of the Cypriot women had a meeting with Sophia King, in charge of the Cyprus Desk at the British Foreign Office, and handed over a petition at the British Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing street.

In their petition, the Cypriot women demand the withdrawal of Turkish troops and settlers form Cyprus, the return of refugees to their homes and the resolution of the question of missing persons.

They ask Britain not to directly or indirectly recognise the illegal entity unilaterally declared in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island.

During their three-day protest in London the women distributed leaflets on the Cyprus problem and protested outside the Turkish Embassy in London.

The women return to Cyprus today.
