[01] Italy joins efforts to help reach a Cyprus solution

Dini was speaking in Rome yesterday, after a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart, Alecos Michaelides, within the framework of the latter's current tour to six European capitals.

A press release issued after the meeting said Michaelides informed his counterpart on the latest developments of the Cyprus problem, concentrating on the security issue.

The Minister stressed "the importance of a more accurate role of the EU" in efforts to solve the protracted problem.

Dini agreed that effective initiatives are necessary for a speedy solution to the Cyprus issue, noting that 1997 "should be the year of Cyprus" and that Italy will work together with other EU countries for a settlement.

The two FMs also discussed bilateral issues and enhancing relations between the two countries.

Michaelides has already visited Athens, London and Paris as part of an effort to help reach a Cyprus settlement and the island's EU membership.

On Monday he will meet German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel in Bonn and concludes his tour on Tuesday with a meeting in The Hague with the President of the EU Council of Ministers, Hans van Mierlo. Michaelides returns to the island on Tuesday night.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

[02] Cypriot doctors help Albanians

The two "World Doctors" will be based at the hospital of Sarande, providing medical care to civilians, Theocharous told CNA Saturday.

They will also be supplying medical provisions worth five thousand US dollars, she added, while fellow doctors in Cyprus will be collecting donations for further medical provisions.

The two World Doctors' latest mission was in Haiti last December, where they performed 35 operations on children suffering from AIDS.

They had also provided their humanitarian services to other parts of the world, including Armenia and Serbia. CNA/AZK/AP/1997

[03] Women stage anti-occupation demonstrations in Nicosia, London

A press release issued by the Pancyprian Anti-occupation Movement (PAK) said that women will stage an all-night sit-down protest this evening at the Ledra Palace checkpoint, to demonstrate the violation of human rights by Turkey in Cyprus.

Meanwhile, 70 Cypriot women joined forces early today with London Greek Cypriots who have been staging a sit-down protest outside the Turkish embassy in the British capital, since the brutal killings of two unarmed Greek Cypriot peaceful demonstrators by Turkish occupation troops and extremists at the southeastern Dherynia UN-controlled buffer zone last August.

The women demanded the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops, the ascertainment of the fate of 1619 missing persons, the return of the refugees to their homes and condemned the recent killings in the buffer zone.

They went to Oxford Street and are handing out leaflets about the violation of human rights in Cyprus by Turkey and the Cyprus problem.

On Monday afternoon the women will hold a four-hour silent protest outside the House of Commons, before ending their campaign outside Turkish embassy.

Members of PAK were expected to leave for the British capital today to take part in the events.

Meanwhile, an American tourist who visited the Ledra Palace checkpoint earlier today to cross to the occupied north, not only was discouraged by the demonstrators but also contributed 113 Cyprus pounds (226 US dollars) to the organisers of the tourists' enlightment campaign on Turkish atrocities.
