[02] British Foreign Office denies reports

London, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Britain's Foreign Office and one of the country's largest travel organisations have said that British citizens are not discouraged from visiting Cyprus.

Cyprus' Acting President Spyros Kyprianou told the press today that he had information that British tourists were being discouraged from visiting the island.

For this reason, he instructed the island's High Commissioner in London, Vanias Markides, to look into the reports.

Invited by the CNA correspondent in the British capital to comment on the reports, the Foreign Office said:

"There has not been any change at all in our policy regarding Cyprus".

A similar position was echoed by the "Thompson" travel organisation. A spokesman told CNA that "business to Cyprus is as usual, until the Foreign Office advises us otherwise".

He said "there has been some media speculation regarding this matter but it has proved unfounded".

[03] Cyprus to make representations on Rifkind's statements

Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus Acting President Spyros Kyprianou has asked the island's High Commissioner in London Vanias Markides to make representations about recent statements on Cyprus by Britain's Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4 "File on Four", aired Tuesday night, Rifkind said he saw a "serious possibility" of conflict between Greece and Turkey, over the Aegean.

Kyprianou noted that once a conflict over the Aegean breaks out, "Cyprus will not remain unaffected".

The Acting President discussed the whole matter with the island's acting Foreign Minister, Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou, and Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros.

In London, a Foreign Office spokesman issued a press release stating that Rifkind's remarks were "incorrectly interpreted" by a number of media reports "as a reference to possible conflict between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus".

"His point on Cyprus was a different one. He said that there was every reason why there should be a settlement, but there has been a lack of political will in both Cypriot communities", the Foreign Office spokesman explained.

"Britain will remain active and determined in support of the UN efforts to help the two communities achieve a settlement," he concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
