    [02] CNA inaugurates new technology

Nicosia,Cyprus,04/02/1997 (CNA) -- Today's inauguration of the new technology the Cyprus News Agency has acquired, as part of its efforts to upgrade its services, marks a new beginning, Interior Minister Dinos Michaelides has said.

''New installations, modern technology and persistent effort have rendered CNA a serious, credible and reliable Agency, which goes beyond national bounds and creates new possibilities,'' the Minister stressed as he inaugurated Tuesday CNA's advanced technology.

He described CNA's close cooperation with the Athens News Agency (APE) as ''a decisive move and a giant technological step'' and reiterated the government's support for further development of the state Agency.

The chairman of the Board of Directors, Anthos Lygavgis, described CNA as an effective medium for the dissemination of factually correct information in a bid to boost the enligthenment campaign on the Cyprus question.

''While maintaining its credibility and independence, CNA provides information to local and overseas subscribers information on current issues relating to Cyprus,'' Lykavgis said.

CNA has cooperation agreements with the Athens News Agency, the Middle East News Agency, Reuters, Itar-Tass, the French News Agency, the Italian News Agency, the Polish News Agency, the Macedonian News Agency and shortly the Chinese News Agency.

CNA Director Andreas Christofides said the Agency has access to places the Cyprus government does not and added ''we intend to exploit all possibilities available to us and use the new technology as a tool to promote the Cyprus question.''

APE Director, Andreas Christodoulides, said today's step CNA has taken ''is important because this is the only way it can have contact with the rest of the world.''

''CNA is no longer a state service but a dynamic and professional, albeit small, Agency,'' he said and underlined the significance of the cooperation between APE and CNA in a joint effort to promote the national goals of hellenism worldwide.
