0910:CYPPRESS:01[01] Kornblum on US initiative on CyprusWashington, Dec 21 (CNA) -- The Cyprus question really needs to be solved now, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, John Kornblum, has said during his annual review briefing.''I would say that there is a very strong consensus in Europe, in the United States, and I think also in Cyprus, that this is an issue which really does need to be solved now,'' Kornblum said. He said also that he worked very hard during the year on the Cyprus issue, and that Ambassador Madeleine Albright, the designate Secretary of State, made an important visit in Cyprus. ''We worked quite hard, I worked personally, quite hard on it during the past year and as you know, Ambassador Albright in her role as US ambassador to the UN made a very important visit there in the summer,'' he noted. The Assistant Secretary of State for Europe pointed out that all the elements for a solution in Cyprus are present, and it is a question for the participants to determine whether the time has come to push for a solution. ''I think that we have all of the elements of a solution there, and it's a question now of the participants, that includes the parties of the island and it includes the European Union, it includes the United States, it includes the United Nations, that all the parties now need to determine whether the time has come to push for a solution,'' Kornblum said. Referring to this week's visit to Cyprus by the British Foreign Secretary, Kornblum said Malcolm Rifkind gave a very important push to the issue. He also announced that, when the new U.S. National Security team is in place, the US will work very hard to see whether the time has come to make such a push. ''Secretary Rifkind, I think, gave it a very important push with his visit. And we will be working once our new team is in place. We'll be working very hard also to see whether the time has come to make such a push, '' he added. Kornblum concluded his remarks on Cyprus by saying that the Cyprus problem is a very complex issue and he preferred not to go into details right now.
