[01] Cypriot football official in UEFA executive committee

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- Cypriot football official Marios Leykaritis has been elected member of the UEFA executive committee.

Lefkaritis, who is the President of the Cyprus Football Association, received 36 votes out of 49 member associations, in yesterday's elections held in London.

He will serve in the nine-member UEFA executive committee for the next four years.

This is the first time that a Cypriot football official is elected in this body.

[02] UN envoy leaves for Athens and Ankara

Larnaca, Jun 30 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General's newly appointed Special Representative on Cyprus Han Sung-Joo left Cyprus this morning after six days of discussions with the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

The former Foreign Minister of South Korea held talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and had meetings with political party leaders, leading businessmen and trade unionists from both sides.

Han is flying to Athens to hold talks with Greek government officials on the Cyprus problem, before flying on to Ankara for similar talks with Turkish officials.

He told the press at Larnaca International Airport that he was not leaving the island discouraged and that during his visits to Athens and Ankara he will try ''to find out the policies and positions of Greece and Turkey.''

After Turkey, he will be visiting the capitals of other European countries before returning to UN Headquarters on July 14 ''to assess my findings in Cyprus as well as in other capitals of Europe.''

Han said he did not come to Cyprus ''with the expectation that there will be a magic formula as such.'' On the other hand, he added, he is not leaving with disappointment.

''I have been able to confirm the hope and expectation that a solution can be made and should be made and also help that there is an urgency among both of the communities on the island of Cyprus that a solution must be found,'' he said.

He referred to the UN-proposed Confidence Building Measures, saying the proposal is on the table.

''As we try to get an agreement on them, at the same time, I will have to find a strategy or a map that will lead us to the goal we are seeking, which is the complete solution of the Cyprus problem,'' the UN envoy said.

Repeated UN, US, British and Canadian efforts for a Cyprus settlement were blocked by Turkey, whose troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of numerous UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
