What did Clerides and Demirel say?

PICTURES of President Clerides meeting his Turkish counterpart, Suleyman Demirel in Istanbul, made the front page of all but one daily (left-wing Haravghi) yesterday.

Most papers reported that the two men had met and shaken hands at the hotel where the OSCE Summit is being held.

Right-wing Machi was the only paper to report what it said was the conversation between the two Presidents.

"We're expecting a lot from you Mr President," Demirel is quoted as telling Clerides.

The reply from Clerides, Machi stated, was: "And we are expecting a lot from you, Mr President."

All the papers agreed that the Turkish side was showing absolutely no sign of changing its stance on Cyprus.

"Ecevit is putting the Cyprus problem on the shelf," was Haravghi's headline, referring to the Turkish Prime Minister's statement that Cyprus and Greco-Turkish relations should not be mixed.

Results from government tests on emissions from the Ergates foundry also made headlines yesterday.

Alithia reported that Labour Minister Andreas Moushiouttas had called for the owner of the metal works to be prosecuted after tests showed it was releasing twice the permitted level of contaminated dust.

Reports suggested the particulates content in smoke emissions from the foundry were 790 mg per cubic metre, when the permitted level was 30 mg.

Meanwhile, Philelephtheros reported that police were "rounding up" 14-year- olds students from discotheques.

Thirteen and fourteen-year-old students had been caught partying in a Nicosia disco, the paper reported. But their fun was rudely interrupted by a police raid. The manager of the club was reprimanded because he had allowed under-age kids entry, the paper reported. The juveniles were taken to the police department for verification of their identity. Parents were notified in the early hours to come pick up their charges. Police apparently told the parents to keep better control of their offspring.

An alleged attack by a student at a Limassol lyceum against his teachers made most of the papers yesterday.

An 18-year-old student had attacked two teachers, injuring one of them, the papers said. The teacher required hospital treatment.
