EU Commissioner will try to meet Denktash

DUE to a public holiday on Monday there were only two newspapers on Tuesday. They both focus on developments in the Cyprus problem and attempts to replace the National Council with a new advisory body to be called National Policy Council (NPC).

Dilini says that Greek Foreign under-secretary Yiannos Kranidiotis was to have contacts in Brussels yesterday regarding the participation of Turkish Cypriots on the Cyprus negotiating team for the EU accession talks.

The paper says that EU Commissioner Hans Van den Broek will be in Cyprus tomorrow and will try to meet with Denktash to discuss the Turkish Cypriots' participation in the talks.

Following the EU's decision to start accession talks with Cyprus denktash has refused to meet with any EU officials.

It is also pointed out that the Greek and Cypriot governments have already come up with four different scenarios to propose regarding the participation of Turkish Cypriots.

Apogevmatini says that a proposal by Edek leader Vassos Lyssarides to form a new body (NPC) to replace the National Council has met a cool reception by most political parties.

The paper says that up to now only the Democratic Rally party seems to be in favour of such a move.

All the other parties declared that they don't view such a development favourably.

Lyssarides was expected to present his proposal to all party leaders yesterday.

On another issue the paper says that Water Department officials are considering whether fines should be imposed on people whose monthly water bills point to an over-consumption of water by their household.
