EU is Turkey's bargaining chip

THE Greek newspapers deal with a variety of issues on their front pages. Some opt for developments on the Cyprus problem while others cover the recent arrest of two Turkish Cypriots suspected of smuggling.

Phileleftheros says that the relations between Turkey and the European Union are thought to be the driving force behind any new developments in the attempts to solve the Cyprus problem.

According to the newspaper the United States are doing their best to secure a better treatment of Turkey by the EU to enable them to pressure their Nato ally on the Cyprus issue.

Phileleftheros says that the US knows what would drive Turkey to adopt a more conciliatory stance but are unable to facilitate its demands as this is a decision that must be taken by the EU.

Haravghi says that President Clerides is expected to delay his decision as to whether he will be a candidate in the presidential elections until November 15.

The paper says that if Clerides decides not to stand he might backtrack on a promise to Diko president Spyros Kyprianou to back him as a candidate for the February elections.

To Tharros says that the Americans have sent to the area a unit of their elite anti-terrorist Delta Force in view of the rise of Islamist activity in the area.

The paper says that the unit is based at the British base of Akrotiri.

Agon chooses to report on the continuing speculation as to whether Attorney-General Alecos Markides will be a candidate in next year's presidential elections.

The paper says that some members of Disy as well as a businessman member of Diko are moving to secure the candidacy of Markides.

The paper says that Diko president Spyros Kyprianou has a letter from a Disy member asking a Diko member to work for the promotion of a Markides candidacy, if and when he decides to stand for President.

Alithia reports on the meeting early next month between the Prime Ministers of Turkey and Greece in Crete on the sidelines of a Balkan meeting.

The paper says that Turkish PM Mesut Yilmaz will present Costas Simitis with a plan to reduce tension in the relations of their two countries.

The paper also reports that four Greek Cypriots were arrested on Sunday, suspected of smuggling, following information furnished to the authorities by two Turkish Cypriots arrested last week.

Simerini says that Disy president Nicos Anastassiades has reacted unfavourably to rumours Alecos Markides might stand for President.

The paper says that Anastassiades has said that Disy is bound to back Clerides if decides to run for a second term.
