Coalition row erupts

THE Clerides-Kyprianou row over the President's intentions regarding the presidential elections made front-page news in all the Greek papers yesterday.

Phileleftheros says that yesterday was going to be a crucial day regarding the continuation or not of the governing coalition between Diko and Disy.

The paper points out that a planned meeting between Kyprianou and Clerides scheduled for yesterday would not materialise following Clerides' comments that he would have nothing to announce to Spyros Kyprianou regarding his intention to seek a second term as president or not.

Phileleftheros also reports the wounding of a National Guard soldier by another soldier after a quarrel.

Reporting on the souring of relations between Diko and Disy Alithia says that the executive committee of Diko was scheduled to meet yesterday afternoon to examine steps to be taken following Clerides' denial to comment on his decision regarding the presidential elections.

The paper says that a meeting at Larnaca airport before President Clerides leaves for abroad might prove crucial to the future of the coalition.

Simerini quotes Diko president Spyros Kyprianou as saying that President Clerides is underestimating him by trying to avoid discussion of his plans for the February presidential elections.

The paper also reports on strict security measures taken in the vicinity of the Nicosia courts for the start of the trial of the Aeroporos brothers accused of the attempted murder of Antonis Fanieros.

Haravghi also carried the election row news on its front page. The paper prints comments by Kyprianou that Diko had sacrificed many things for Clerides to be elected to the presidency.

The paper also publishes details of the visit to Larnaca of Akel-backed presidential candidate George Iacovou.

Agon says that following comments by President Clerides and Diko president Spyros Kyprianou on Sunday it seems that the end of the coalition is approaching fast.

The paper says that a meeting of the executive committee of Diko yesterday would be crucial to the future of the coalition.

To Tharros says that two embassies in Cyprus have ordered their agents to collect information regarding the sites where the S-300 missiles will be based.

The paper says that the agents pose as tourists or journalists.
