Measures taken to avoid pollution

ALL the Greek papers yesterday continued their coverage of the aftermath of the fire which destroyed the Cypriot cruise liner Romantica.

Simerini says that a full investigation is not expected to be carried out until the fire on the ship is extinguished. The paper says measures have already been taken to avoid the possibility of sea pollution.

In another front-page story, Simerini says the threatened strike of hotel employees in Limassol will have grave effects on tourism on the island.

Concerning the ship fire, Machi says the police investigation is focusing on some repairs that were carried out in Port Said. According to the paper the only information authorities have is that the fire apparently started in the engine room. It also reports that Cypriot businessman George Paraskevaides owns a brand new car having drawn the lucky ticket in the annual raffle of the Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation.

Agon leads on President Clerides's speech to the UN General Assembly. The paper says Clerides condemned Turkish threats to launch a pre- emptive military strike if Cyprus goes ahead with the purchase of the Russian S-300 missiles.

Alithia reports that both Edek and the United Democrats have rejected a call by the communist Akel party that they divert their criticism to the Clerides administration instead of attacking Akel for choosing George Iacovou to be its candidate for the February presidential elections. The paper also reports that Diko president Spyros Kyprianou expects President Clerides will announce if he is running for a second term some time later this month.

Akel-backed Haravghi says that as soon as President Clerides announces his intention to run for a second term all the ministers who back Diko are expected to resign. The paper says Diko's political bodies are expected to make this decision public in the near future.

Phileleftheros, in a front-page report, says that members of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot labour unions have been invited to Brussels to work together on co-operation plans to take effect when Cyprus finally joins the EU. On the issue of the Romantica fire the paper says that officials are working hard to prevent pollution of the area near the ship.
