[01] Clean-up campaign doomed from the start?MOTORWAY litter louts have just two weeks to clean up their act. After that, they could become fair game for the police.A month-long island-wide 'Clean-up Campaign' begins tomorrow, backed by the government. Between now and July 14, there will be warning signs on the motorways, advertising in the media, and volunteers picking up rubbish. The decision to crack down was taken at a meeting where representatives of various departments were present, including the police, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Education Ministry and the Public Works Department. The first 15 days of the campaign will focus on giving out information, enlightenment and raising public awareness about the problem. Then, from July 1 onwards, those who continue to ignore the 'Keep Cyprus Clean' message face being charged by the police and fined. But in a sign that the campaign may be doomed before it has even begun, a police spokesman at Nicosia headquarters was unable to say yesterday what penalties may be imposed on motorists caught littering the highways. And a spokesman for Limassol police seemed unaware that the campaign was even happening. Despite the confusion, Nicosia police told the Sunday Mail the crackdown will not end as the campaign draws to a close. The drive to keep the island clean will go on, with offenders continuing to be penalised, he said. Copyright Cyprus Mail 2002 [02] Protest to UN over 'more Turkish troops'THE GOVERNMENT has strongly protested against the reported recent reinforcement of Turkish troops in the north by as many as 5,000, bringing the total to 40,000.In a letter to UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan, the Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zacheos, said "this action flagrantly violates resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council and of other international organisations, such as the Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth, which call, inter alia, for the withdrawal of the occupation troops from Cyprus".Zacheos said that between May 24 and June 9 around 5,500 Turkish troops had arrived in the north. "It is obvious that these actions constitute a deliberate attempt on the part of Ankara to create and maintain, at the local and regional level, an atmosphere of tension, fear and intimidation," Zacheos said. "Provocations such as we have witnessed recently demonstrate a lack of political will and raise serious questions as to the desire of the Turkish side to engage in the (Cyprus) talks with good faith," he said. Copyright Cyprus Mail 2002 [03] Thieves raid house for rifle and cashTHIEVES broke into the home of a Limassol District man yesterday and stole a National Guard-issue G3 rifle and £1,700 in cash, police said. It was the third theft of a weapon in Limassol in three days.The latest incident happened in the early hours between 1.30am and 3am. Alecos Mavrides, from Pano Polemidhia, returned home from his son's engagement party to find the gun and the money missing. Limassol police said the thieves appear to have broken into the house from the back entrance. They also said it was not the first time Mavrides' property has been attacked. Some time ago shots were fired at one of his storehouses in the village, and the wheels of his tractor were also stolen. Prior to that thieves also stole a number of his goats.
