[01] Fair enough or not enough?By Stefanos EvripidouTHE International State Fair in Nicosia ends today, with some exhibitors saying there has been a definite downturn in visitors to an annual event that used to attract thousands every night. While the State Fair is still the island's largest fair, it also competes with itself in that it also puts on several specialised exhibitions -- for example on technology, furniture and the office -- throughout the rest of the year. According to the Chairman of the State Fairs Authority, Iakovos Demetriou, visitor numbers this year would appear to be on a par with 2001, and although over the past 20 years there may have been fluctuations in visitors he sees no obvious trend of a reduction in public interest. But one exhibitor in the American pavilion said the number of visitors this year has been the lowest ever, and put this down to a general slump in the world economy. He also said fewer people seemed to come every year, and the quality of goods on offer was not as high as it used to be. Another said he thought the number of visitors was much the same as last year, but they had less money to spend. However, both exhibitors indicated that they would be back again in 2003, as well as taking part in specialised exhibitions staged by the State Fairs Authority. Ioannou said that a strong fire-fighting force was sent to the area within minutes of the outbreak, and was able to contain the fire before it spread. The fire was extinguished, but Ioannou said that fire-fighters would remain in the area in case it re-ignites.
