[01] Sharon to take over Nicosia Dog Shelter

SHARON Beckett is to take over the Nicosia Dog Shelter on December 1 after she independently rescued more than 300 stray dogs from the Nicosia area over the past year.

But the Nicosia shelter is only large enough for 30 dogs at once, and she was forced to drive many of the strays to the Paphos shelter.

" You never say no to a dog in need, even if you have to suffer the consequences of overcrowding,"said the founder of the Nicosia Dog Shelter, Marie Hutton, who said she was " over the moon"Sharon will be manager.

" The main thing is to rehouse the animals,"she said. " It can be difficult, but in my experience it is getting better and there's a growing interest in companion animals, particularly in Nicosia,"she said.

No animal will be turned away, even if they have to be put down rather than sent back to the streets.

The spaying of all dogs at the Nicosia shelter should keep the unwanted dog population under control within five years. Experts estimate that each female dog living on the streets can give birth to 20 puppies in one year.

The Nicosia Dog Shelter is a registered charity.

[02] Directive to check A310 tails 'no cause for concern'

So far the directive does not apply to Cyprus, despite an urgent communiqué yesterday from the French civil aviation authority (DGAC) to the British Civil Aviation Authority to check all cargo and passenger A300-600 and A310 aircraft. CY operates four A310s.

The tailfin of the American Airlines jet that crashed in Queens last week was ripped off three minutes after it took off from JFK airport.

The French directive involves a " one-off precautionary"sight inspection of the tail plane's vertical stabiliser and rudder attachment fitting.

" We are in contact with the British Civil Aviation Authority because we operate under their licence, but we have had no specific instructions about doing these checks,"CY spokesman Tassos Angelis told the Sunday Mail .

" We know Airbus are preparing some instructions for aircraft of specific serial numbers, but we don't know what. If we're asked to inspect anything, we'll do it immediately, but there is no reason for any concern,"he added.

CY is also in touch with General Electric, the manufacturers of the engines in the fated American Airlines plane and on CY aircraft.

General Electric has assured the national carrier that there was no fault with either of the two engines on the American Airlines jet.

There are four A310s in the CY fleet, which seat 241 and fly long-haul routes to the UK and northern Europe.

The French directive does not include the company's eight A320s, if and when it is applied to Cyprus.

[03] Two mayors reinstated unopposed

Paphos Mayor Phidias Sarikas of KISOS and his Lefkoniko counterpart, independent Michalis Pilikos, were yesterday reinstated as mayors for a five-year term beginning the day after the December 16 municipal elections. The two mayors announced their intention to seek re-election last month.

Two independent names put forward for the Paphos post a few weeks ago were later rejected after objections to their candidacies were sustained.

The Lefkoniko Municipal Council was also reinstated yesterday as there had been no additional candidacies for municipal councillors in the village, which is in the occupied area.

[04] Stolen car found gutted by fire

The Triumph car, which belonged to Charalambous Andreou from Ayios Dometios in Nicosia, was stolen on Friday.

It was found yesterday morning at around 7.30am, gutted by fire. Police said yesterday that they have no suspects so far, despite a two-pronged investigation by Nicosia and Paphos CID.
