[01] Unpaid volunteers wanted for Miss Universe

MEMBERS of the Miss Universe organising team arrive in Cyprus today in search of a wide range of volunteers and to continue preparations for the beauty contest.The pageant=s Host Committee says its Athens-based chairman Nicos Mastorakis is looking for "volunteers who have the goodwill and temperament to take part in the preparations".

He called it an excellent opportunity for people "from college students to hairdressers to volunteer their services for the biggest international event that has ever happened in Cyprus".

During his visit Mastorakis will also be working on the filming of a daily magazine show to be broadcast for three consecutive weeks before the May 13 pageant on Cypriot and Greek television.

He said he is also interested in Cypriot fashion designers contributing to various events within the pageant's framework.

Also arriving for the six-day visit tomorrow will be Miss Universe organisation president Maureen Reidy, the organisation's vice-president Paula Shugart, stage directors Gerry Hariton and Vicki Barral.

Shugart and Hariton will have a scale model of the stage with them and plan to interview specialised set construction workers who may be hired to help build it. The team will also visit the pageant's venue, Nicosia's Eleftheria Stadium.

[02] Government doctors stage overtime ban

GOVERNMENT doctors start an overtime ban from tomorrow in protest at what they say were slurs made against them at a recent House of Representatives Watchdog Committee meeting.The Government Doctors= Union (Pasiky) cut short a three- hour work stoppage two weeks ago in protest at deputies accusing them of being slick operators during the January 27 meeting, which was reviewing a report by Auditor-general Chrystalla Yiorkatzi.

The report said that at at least one unnamed hospital, two specific operations were only carried out at weekends and on public holidays, when the surgeons were paid overtime.

The decision to cut the strike short followed assurances that the Health Minister did not agree with the Watchdog Committee's statements about the doctors.

Minister Frixos Savvides also put forward a proposal for an on-call system to be introduced at state hospitals, with doctors sleeping at hospital halls of residence and being paid per procedure performed during irregular hours.

Savvides said Pasiky had accepted his proposal and that the next step would be for the Finance Ministry to decide how much extra the doctors would be paid per procedure.

Pasiky vice-president Dr Petros Petrides said at the time the doctors were satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, but he still did not rule out doctors not working overtime after February 14, as originally planned.

Pasiky president Dr Stavros Stavrou was quoted yesterday as saying that the overtime ban was not meant as strike action but as a gesture while intense negotiations on the on-call system continue.

He also said the action would not affect emergency cases.

[04] 'Fischer told Denktash to stop seeking recognition'

The Athens News Agency said its sources at the Ministry said that Fischer had made it clear he was only interested in contributing to a solution to the Cyprus problem, and not in recognising the self-declared 'state' in the occupied areas.

The same sources said that Denktash limited his discussion with Fischer to analysing his positions during the recently second round of proximity talks in Geneva.

Denktash met Fischer on Friday at the German Minister's invitation. The government in Nicosia had been concerned that the invitation to Denktash might have been seen as an indirect form of recognition of the Turkish Cypriot regime.

[05] Turkish Cypriots 'want face-to-face talks as soon as possible'

"As long as the Greek administration is allowed to use the name Republic of Cyprus, there is no chance of reaching a bilateral agreement on the island. This fact should now be recognised by all the relevant sides," said Tahsin Ertugruloglu, the Turkish Cypriot <Foreign and Defence Minister".

He also said the proximity talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash could not be regarded as a negotiating process: "Thus far, no one has come to us with a proposal. There is only the UN requesting that we clarify the details of our argument and search for answers to the questions in people's minds."

Ertugruloglu also said that several countries had begun to listen to the Turkish side of the argument: "We have started to make forward progress" on this, he said.

On the government=s accession course towards the European Union, Ertugruloglu said the Turkish Cypriots do not consider the application to include the occupied areas.

"We definitely do not consider the one-sided application by the Greeks as an application that was submitted on behalf of the entire island," he said.

"We are hoping that the possibility of accepting Cyprus as a candidate for EU membership, without reaching a settlement on the island and based on a one-sided application by the Greek side, is no longer valid."

[06] Kyprianou has operation in London

The operation began at around 3pm Cyprus time and lasted for two hours.

Kyprianou flew to England on Friday night and was immediately admitted to St Mary's Hospital, just weeks after undergoing an open-heart operation in the United States.

The decision to operate again was taken after he suffered complications on Thursday when protracted coughing caused chest pains, his doctor said on Friday.

Cyprus Heart Foundation President Evagoras Nicolaides said problems with the sternum often arose after open-heart operations, but that the surgery was not risky.

[07] Agent held as suspect in Terzian insurance fraud case

AN INSURANCE agent has been remanded in connection with a case of suspected forgery of insurance policies on the life of the late rally driver, Vahan Terzian.Dimitris Hadjispyrou, 46, from Limassol, was remanded in custody for eight days in Nicosia on Friday after allegedly forging a policy taken out by Terzian, who was killed when his car went over a cliff and into the sea in the Petra Tou Romiou area, near Paphos, just over a year ago.The court heard that Terzian's brother and sister, Haig and Monika, on October 22 last year submitted a claim with Liberty Life insurance company for ,2 million.

The claim was based on a policy taken out by Terzian on October 13, 1998. When the copy of the contract was submitted, the company compared it to the original and found it had been falsified.

The sum payable in the life insurance policy had been changed from ,500,000 to one million pounds, and the insurance for personal accidents had also been altered, from ,500,000 to one million.

An insurance claim for ,1 million was also submitted to Alico insurance company on October 20 last year.

After studying a copy of the policy presented by the lawyers for Haig and Monika Terzian, it was found that such a policy was never taken out by their late brother.

The case was reported to police who after examining the documents found that the first had been falsified and the other forged.

Haig Terzian was arrested on Thursday after police found copies of the contracts at his home, but was released on the same day without being charged.

On Friday police arrested Hadjispyrou who was Terzian's insurance agent, and who also represented both Liberty Life and Alico.

Police told the court the suspect admitted to being involved in the forgery, and he implicated several other people who may be apprehended soon.

[08] Judge criticises police over bank job publicity

IN AN apparent show of displeasure -- and to the police's surprise -- a judge yesterday ordered two armed robbery suspects to be remanded in custody for only two days.The two suspects aged 19 and 20, both from Nicosia, were arrested late on Friday afternoon after a bank robbery earlier in the day.In making its decision the court criticised police because of the publicity given to the arrests and warned officials to be cautious of what they say.In announcing the arrests on Friday night the obviously pleased police chief, Andreas Angelides, said the two suspects had confessed to carrying out the heist, and he suggested the case was more or less solved.In court yesterday the defence objected to a police request for an eight-day remand, saying the chief's statement that the case had been solved was prejudicial to a fair trial.The judge then said two days would be enough for the police to prepare the prosecution case since it had been already "solved".Police told the court they found ,15,803 and the shotgun used in the robbery at an apartment used by the two suspects. They said ,1, 798 was missing, even though on Friday they told reporters they had recovered the full amount.

Friday=s raid took place at the Larnaca Avenue branch of the Bank of Cyprus in Aglandja in Nicosia, with the robbers getting away with around ,17,000.

Two hooded men entered the bank at 10.55am and threatened staff and customers with a shotgun.

Eyewitnesses said the men were wearing khaki outfits and green hoods.

Police said the two fled the scene in a stolen Mitsubishi Colt and headed north towards the Sopaz area, chased by a passer by who eventually lost them.

On Friday night Angelides expressed his satisfaction at the arrests and praised the officers who had made them.

He also thanked members of the public who had helped police track the suspects down, and said that the force would not let up in its efforts to prevent and solve crime.

Friday's raid was the latest in a string of armed bank robberies on the island over the past twelve months.

Banks have recently bolstered their security by installing closed circuit cameras and alarms connected to the police.
