NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

SARAJEVO - The president from Republika Srpska in the Presidency of B&H, Momcilo Krajisnik, received in Pale the Italian ambassador to Sarajevo, Mecheleo Valensizea and talked about the further implementation of the Dayton agreement. President Krajisnik said after the meeting that he tried to explain the situation in RS and the implementation of the Dayton agreement to the Italian ambassador. "We agreed to that the Dayton Agreement has to be implemented, but I pointed to some indications and threats that some of the mediators want to over-implement the Agreement, in other words, to mix the competence of the entities in B&H, this being very dangerous", pointed Krajisnik.

SARAJEVO - The president from RS in the Presidency of B&H, Momcilo Krajisnik, received in Pale the ICRC delegation chief to B&H, Peter Stoker. They talked about a new approach of the ICRC's in the resolving of the problems of missing persons. According to a communique issued from the president Krajisnik's cabinet, the importance of maximal engagement of all the parties in the resolving of the problems of missing persons was pointed out in the talks. President Krajisnik gave full support to the new approach of the ICRC's. Among the other things, president Krajisnik also thanked Mr Peter Stoker for the ICRC's balanced engagement in regard to the humanitarian issues.

SARAJEVO - The speaker of the RS National Assembly, Dragan Kalinic, talked in Pale with the UN special representative for the former Yugoslavia, Mr Thomas MacDermot, about the application of the Convention on the rights of children. The RS Parliament will nominate an ombudsman for human rights, told Kalinic to Mr. MacDermot at the meeting which was also attended by representatives of the competent ministries.

SARAJEVO - The prime ministers of RS and the Federation of B&H, Gojko Klickovic and Edhem Bicakcic, respectively, talked in Sarajevo about the preparations for a Donors' Conference scheduled to take place in Brussels on June 24 and 25. While expressing his pleasure with the meeting, premier Klickovic pointed out that 'it is of an immense importance for representatives of RS and the Federation of B&H to appear with joint projects at the conference, in which even the international community enters more easily'. 'This time we are going to the conference with a joint project from the field of metallurgy. Similar projects from the field of energetics are already in the realisation and we have to use such experiences in the other spheres as well', explained Klickovic.

SARAJEVO - A full support was given to the Declaration from Sintra at the meeting held between RS president Biljana Plavsic and UN under-secretary for peace operations, Bernard Millet, stated the IPTF spokesman, Alex Ivanko at a press conference in Pale. Millet insisted on the cooperation of the RS competent bodies with IPTF and, especially, of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in regard to the situation in Brcko in the context of the discussion on 'open cities', as well as on the cooperation with The Hague Tribunal. The OSCE spokesman, David Foley, stated that the Provisional Electoral Commission prolonged the deadline for the voters registration in abroad to June 14.

BELGRADE - A member of the Provisional Electoral Commission from RS, Slobodan Kovac, stated that the registration for the September local elections will be some kind of an electoral base for the 1998 general elections, which is to be verified by the international community. Kovac assessed that the local elections represent not only a step forward in the implementation of the Dayton agreement, but also the strengthening of the democratic standards in RS and the FB&H and their political designing.

MODRICA - A trial to a member of the 108th brigade of the Croatian Council of Defence military police, Ferid Halilovic from Odzak, who is accused of war crimes committed against Serb civilians in the concentration camps in Odzak, Novi Grad, near Odzak and Brod, was continued in Modrica today. Eight another witnesses - the former inmates of the above camps, will be interrogated at the hearing led by Zoran Tanasic, a judge of the Grand Jury of the Main Court in Modrica.

BELGRADE - The newly-appointed High Representative of the international community for RS and the FB&H, Carlos Westendorp, announced that he is going to use various pressures so that the Dayton agreement will be implemented fully and consistently. Westendorp stated that he isn't satisfied with the dynamics of the implementation of the Dayton agreement, warning that 'the situation in B&H is not yet stable, because peace has yet to be fully stabilised'. Speaking about the priorities of his activities, the local elections and the holding of a Donors' Conference which is, as he said, 'necessary for the reconstruction', are on the first place.

SARAJEVO - A meeting of the Committee of National Coordinators of the CEI Member States will take place in Sarajevo on June 6 and 7th. The implementation of the Dayton agreement, the new European integration processes and the situation in Albania will be on the agenda.

AMSTERDAM - The international community insists on the return of refugees to RS and FB&H out of, first of all, political reasons, because it wants to create as many as possible multiethnic wards, thus erasing the inter-entity boundary line. This can be concluded from the International Crisis Group's report on the return of refugees, wherein it asserts that about 1,200,000 refugees were registered in the war-stricken areas and the EU states.
