NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

BANJALUKA - The Republika Srpska Presidential Cabinet issued a communique denying the information published by the Belgrade daily 'Gradjanin' on that RS president Biljana Plavsic had met with Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic. The communique stresses that 'since she became the RS president, neither Mrs. Plavsic met nor had any contacts with Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic'. 'The paper's claims that the president Plavsic asked the Serbian president to give up the customs on the Drina, in other words, the boundary line between RS and the FR of Yugoslavia are untruthful and unfounded', says the communique.

SARAJEVO - The RS Government sent a letter of protests to the High Representative, Carl Bildt, due to the speech made by his spokesman, Colom Murphy at the press conference held at the Panorama Hotel in Pale on May 21. He expressed 'the height of disrespect to the Serbian people and its struggle for freedom and dignity'. Namely, spokesman Murphy tried to accuse the Serbs of being responsible for the war. The letter of protest, which was signed by RS Prime Minister, Gojko Klickovic, says: We assume that the text which was read by Your press officer to the gathered journalists is available to You, but it is not clear to us whether this unsuccessful pamphlet-literary attempt on the part of Your officer was agreed to with You personally. If it was, then the protest of ours is politically justified and sent to You personally'.

BRUSSELS - The finding of an appropriate balanced approach in the establishing of an ethnically mixed administration in Brcko represents a difficulty in the preparations for the local elections in RS and the Federation of B&H (FB&H), stated the OSCE Mission chief to B&H, Robert Frowick during the talks with the NATO leaders in Brussels, stressing that 'it is unrealistic to expect to have the democratic elections totally under the western standards'.

SARAJEVO - The UN are resolute in its intention to remove all of the 'irregular' police check points in the B&H, 'because they are restricting the freedom of movement', and if any of the parties oppose the policy, then the IPTF will ask for the SFOR's assistance in the carrying out of their action, stated the UN spokesman, Alex Ivanko in the Muslim part of Sarajevo. He said that the Serbs are opposing the policy and that RS president Biljana Plavsic responded negatively to the requests made by the High Representative, Carl Bildt, and IPTF officer, Khy Aidea, for her to cooperate in the policy, at the meeting which took place in Banjaluka on Wednesday.

SARAJEVO - The Protocol on the forming of the joint police of the Herzegovina/Neretva canton was not signed because Croatian representatives did not appear at the meeting, stated the canton's deputy minister of internal affairs, Sefkija Dziho. He confirmed that the minister of internal affairs, Valentin Coric, also failed to show up at last night's meeting.
