NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

BANJALUKA - Republika Srpska (RS) president Biljana Plavsic pointed out in an interview given for Christmas' edition of the "Glas Srpski" that Brcko is an integral part of the RS sovereign territory. "Brcko has a status of the sovereign territory of RS and, in that regard, there is no difference between Prijedor and Banjaluka or, let's say, Trebinje and Brcko", stated Plavsic. Referring to the frequent Muslim military threats, president Plavsic said that these threats have to be taken seriously and the RS is going to, if it proves necessary, defend Brcko by all means available.

BIJELJINA - Representatives of the Ministry of Defence and Supreme Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska (GS VRS) concluded in Bijeljina that they should work out by the end of January new fundamental sub-legal documents regulating the process of professionalism and the status issues of the Army personnel, says a communique issued by the GS VRS. It further says that the representatives of the General Staff and Ministry of Defence have considered their commitments stemming from the Decision made by the RS president at a session of the Supreme Council of Defence, which relates to the professionalism of the VRS and the supply of its units with equipment.

BANJALUKA - A session of the RS National Assembly Board for economy and finance was held in Banjaluka upon the initiative by the RS government, discussing about the measures for providing 1997 budget of the RS.

CLEVELAND - The Western diplomats and US press agree in the assessment that the next move in Serbia will directly depend on the Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic. However, neither diplomats nor analysts dare even anonymously to foresee which move will it be, wondering whether this will be a peaceful solution of the political crisis, putsch or the imposition of a state of emergency."In the event that Milosevic's regime persists, Serbia will be an isolated state bypassed by everyone, while a democratic Serbia is needed for peace in the Balkans", writes "New York Times"

AMSTERDAM - The official Dutch Informative media focus their attention on the letter sent by Yugoslavian foreign minister Milan Martic to the OSCE wherein admitting opposition's victory in a half of the Belgrade municipalities. But, the media do not hide that the letter was written under a great and ever frequent pressure by the international community on Belgrade's regime to accept the OSCE Commission's report and recognise the opposition victory.

ATHENS - Admitting only a partial opposition's victory at the local elections, the Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic legalised a fraud in the counting of votes and added fuel to the flames that have been burning for months, thus giving a new strength to the Zajedno [Together] coalition followers, the majority of the Greek media assessed. Greek TV Mega's correspondent, Makis Muratidis, pointed out that "Milosevic has made a step forward and two backward by this move".
