  • [01] STRENGTHENING OF ECONOMIC LINKS

President of the Republic of Serbia Slobodan Milosevic received yesterday the Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Mr. Pietro Fasin, who is on an official visit to our country.

During the talks, mutual interest was underlined for further successful development of bilateral cooperation between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Italy, based on traditionally close, good neighborly relations and equality of the two countries and their peoples. Special place in this is occupied by strengthening of the economic links and partnership between Yugoslav and Italian companies which are realizing many successful joint deals.

The meeting was attended by the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Milan Milutinovic. (Politika, November 19, 1996)

[02] SUPPORT OF ITALY TO THE REINTEGRATION OF YUGOSLAVIA IN THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Italy is supporting the reintegration of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in all the international institutions and strengthening of its cooperation with the European Union, stated yesterday the Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Mr. Pietro Fasin at the session of the Forum for International Relations.

"This area is close to Italy and everything that is taking place here is also having an impact on us", said Mr. Fasin and added that further to the political, there are also other reasons - economic, cultural and historical - for which Italy is wishing close relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

While speaking of the wish of Italy to intensify bilateral relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Mr. Fasin underlined that this wish is fully compatible with the strategy of the European Union, which is strengthening of mutual cooperation of the states in the area of former Yugoslavia, together with simultaneous promotion of bilateral cooperation with the European Union. [03] PRIORITY - INTEGRATION IN THE INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL AND TRADE TRENDS

Last night in the Palace of Federation a meeting was held between the Federal Prime Minister Dr. Radoje Kontic and the republican Prime Ministers, Mirko Marjanovic and Milo Djukanovic, representatives of the National Bank and Chamber of Economy of Yugoslavia, where the concept of the economic policy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for the next year was discussed.

The ambitious targets of the economic policy for the next year, foreseeing among others, growth of social product of 13 percent, are based most of all on the stability of prices and the exchange rate of the dinar, growth of production and exports, further structural changes of the economy and its ownership transformation as well as the improved standard of living of the population.

It was stated at the meeting that the normalization of the relations with the financial and trade organizations, i.e. the countries of European Union, and integration of our country in the other regional and world integrations, is not only a priority task, but a basic prerequisite for the realization of the planned targets of the economic policy. [04] WORLD BANK DELEGATION IN YUGOSLAVIA

Delegation of the World Bank arrived yesterday to our country, for the first time after five years. The purpose of the visit of the technical mission of the World Bank is to get acquainted with the state of facts in the Yugoslav economy - how had it functioned under sanctions, what results were achieved in this year, what is the envisaged economic policy for the next year, how far has the ownership restructuring progressed... At the same time, the experts will present the Report on the Development in the World - from plan up to the market. The report will be presented today in Belgrade, then in Podgorica and Novi Sad.

Federal Government has already prepared the Report on its activities connected with the normalization of the relations and has passed the decree on the membership of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the International Monetary Fund and the other international financial organizations, which was adopted by the Parliament of Yugoslavia at its extraordinary session held in late August this year. [05] CONSTRUCTION OF THE OIL PIPELINE FROM BUDAPEST TO NOVI SAD

Russia intends to compensate great losses suffered because of the economic sanctions which were imposed on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia through intensifying and significant extension of trading and economic cooperation with Belgrade - reported yesterday the Russian Ministry for International Economic Cooperation.

In the Ministry it is stated that lifting of sanctions is offering great chances for Moscow and Belgrade to return the goods exchange to the previous level of two billion US dollars and even to surpass it through the realization of significant agreements which the two countries have reached in good time.

It is a question in the first phase, of the exchange of the Russian oil and gas, power engineering equipment and some products of machine building and chemical industries for the Yugoslav footwear, clothing and other consumer industry products, as well as food stuffs and technological equipment. In the second phase, Belgrade and Moscow should start with the realization of the large-scale joint projects, in the value of hundreds of millions of US dollars. As an example of such ventures is mentioned the construction of the gas pipeline in the territory of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the oil pipeline leading from Budapest to Novi Sad. [06] DACIC: CONVINCING VICTORY AT LOCAL ELECTIONS

Electoral boards in the electoral units in Serbia are continuing with the counting of votes of the second round of local elections held on November 17, 1996.

The spokesman of the Socialist Party of Serbia Ivica Dacic, stated yesterday that, according to the data from the 174 municipalities, the Socialist Party of Serbia has either independently or through the single list with JUL and ND (Yugoslav United Left and New Democracy), won a convincing victory in 134 municipalities.

According to yet incomplete information from the electoral headquarters of the other parties, opposition has the lead in Kragujevac, Cacak, Novi Sad, Kikinda, Kraljevo and Uzice. Unofficial data of the City Electoral Commission of Belgrade are pointing out that from the total of 110 deputy seats, coalition "Together" (coalition "Zajedno") will obtain the majority of 70 seats, coalition SPS, JUL and ND (Socialist Party of Serbia, Yugoslav United Left and New Democracy) 21 seats, Serbian Radical Party 17 seats and Democratic Party of Serbia 2 seats.

The final electoral results on voting for the deputies at local elections in Serbia are expected today after 20:00 hours. (Vecernje novosti, November 19, 1996)

[07] THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF LIBERATION OF VUKOVAR WAS CELEBRATED

"We still persist and exist. We are ourselves reconstructing and building and providing the existence for the majority of people living here. Our aim is for all the people living in this multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-confessional region to remain and persist. There is no one without the other: there is no existence without secured basic conditions for survival, just as the secured conditions for survival are worth nothing without our existence here. If the international community truly wishes and has the interest for the Serbs to remain here, it will have to understand and act in accordance with the very essence of the situation. And this situation is demanding first of all for us here to be efficiently physically protected and for us to be secured the necessary degree of political, economic and cultural independence", underlined Miroslav Keravica, the Mayor of Vukovar, at the celebration session of the Municipal Assembly of Vukovar, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the liberation of this city. (Politika ekspres, November 19, 1996)

[08] THE DATE SET FOR TRIAL OF IZETBEGOVIC

Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Srpska in Pale, yesterday and through the intermediary of the IFOR officers, served with the indictment filed by the Public Prosecution of Banja Luka and summoned for trial Alija Izetbegovic, the leader of the Bosnian Muslims. Izetbegovic is indicted for war crimes.

Izetbegovic had the intention of creating an Islamic state, first of all in the area of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and since he failed to succeed in realizing this by political means, he tried it through the force of arms, through war and at the detriment of the Serbian people.

Against Izetbegovic and his closest associates, criminal charges have been raised with the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague in July 1996. (Vecernje novosti, November 19, 1996)

    [09] ADDRESS BY THE PATRIARCH

By the introductory address of the Serbian Patriarch Pavle, delivered last night in front of a large audience of Kolarac Endowment Hall, a marathon cycle of lectures was inaugurated, devoted to the jubilee of two millenniums of Christianity.

With chosen words, using Biblical quotations and recalling the words of Gospel evangelists and Old Testament prophets, Patriarch Pavle has sent a message: "A message both to myself and to all those who are willing to listen", that "serenity is attained not only through the knowledge of the Gospel faith, but through faith alive and manifested in the wise building for oneself of the eternal house on the cornerstones of Gospel deeds, and not on the sand of its sole knowledge". (Borba, November 19, 1996)
