  • [01] Race to the office of President of Romania has 12 runners

There are 12 runners left in the race for the office of President of the country. There were 13 but one of them, namely Lucian Orasel, was banned from the race by the Constitutional Court as he had retained double citizenship which is contrary to the laws of the country for the candidates to very high state offices. All the other 12 are valid runners. General and Presidential elections are held on 26 November.

    [02] Elections of Romania will be monitored by O S C E

The Office for the supervision of elections in Romania was set up by OSCE and it will operate from Bucharest and from Cluj. The mission is led by Mrs. Linda Edwards from the United States and in the focus of the monitors there are the electoral campaign and the media coverage of the campaign.

[03] The European Commission Report about Romania

The European Commission released in Brussels the annual reports regarding the progress of the 13 candidate countries to adherence. Mr. Verheugen referred to two aspects which are linked to economy and namely domestic functional market and capacity to face competition of the domestic markets of the European Union. He estimated that Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey do not yet meet any of the two criteria mentioned before. The chapter referring to Romanian economic status mentions that one of the challenges of the Bucharest Cabinet is structural reform and a cut down of inflation. Stress is laid on financial discipline in companies that belong to the public sector. On the other hand mention is also made of the foreign participation of the economy of Romania which is a rather fragile sector and stress is laid on the balance of payment, the solving of the problem of the deficit and the dramatic reduction of the foreign debt. Despite all this, Romania cannot be regarded as a functional market economy, as progress scored in macroeconomic stabilization was undermined by insufficient privatization, by the financial losses of the state companies, by the lack of financial resources and the informal sector which is on the increase. Corruption is a problem in Romania while administrative capacity should be strengthened. With regard to the SAPARD programme it is mentioned that funds for the year 2000 can be engaged by the end of this year.

[04] German officials stand for the cancellation of visa obligativity for the Romanian citizens travelling to the Schengen area

During his recent trip to Germany Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, secretary of state with the Foreign Ministry of Romania, had talks with his West German opposite number who declared that that Ministry stood for the cancellation of visas for the Romanian citizens that travel to West European countries. The Romanian official declared, in his turn, that Romania was adopting a number of concrete technical measures that lead to the decrease of illegal immigration and the strengthening of control at the Eastern frontier, a revized visa policy and added security elements to passports and other travel documents. The Romanian diplomat also said that starting next year passports are the only documents that allow entrance to Romania of foreign citizens and that decision is made regardless of political risks.

[05] Conclusions of the head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Bucharest

The Head of the European Commission Delegation to Bucharest, Fokion Fotiadis, presented last night the main conclusions of the Report of the European Commission for the year 2000 regarding the request of Romania to adhere to the European Union. From the political point of view it is specified that although Romania adopted with the support of the European Union legislative administrative and financial measures for the protection of institutionalized children their situation continues to be difficult. Corruption is a widespread problem undermining the economy and the political institutions of this country. Also added to the political criterion it is specified that minorities are protected in this country but the Romany people do not benefit of the engagement of the Romanian government. In the economic domain the macroeconomic situation needs to be improved as the progress recorded is not very significant.

    [07] Anniversaries and Commemorations

1330, 9 - 12 November. The army of Wallachia of Prince Basarab I defeated the invading army of Charles Robert of Anjou, King of Hungary, at Posada, in a pass of the mountains in the Olt River valley. It was a rather bloody and merciless battle during which the Romanians, holding an elevated position, ambushed the convoys of the enemy. Using the weapons of that time plus boulders and trees our ancestors won the battle and almost killed the enemy leader who was the king of the neighbor country. There are 670 years since that battle that sanctioned the independence and sovereignty of Wallachia which in Romanian is TARA ROMANEASCA, the southern part of the country.
