  • [01] Debates in the Chamber of Deputies unfolded in the absence of the MPies representing the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania - UDMR

    The MPies representing the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania decided to leave the debates of the Chamber of Deputies and they will not be present at the debates until the draft bill on the general regime of local autonomy is debated.

    [02] The Cabinet of Romania decided to lift the embargo against Yugoslavia

    The Cabinet of Romania decided to lift the embargo against oil deliveries to Yugoslavia as a conseqence of the decision of the foreign ministers of the European Union states to lift the embargo against that country. The spokesperson of the Cabinet said yersterday that the Cabinet of Romania that rallied to the decision of Europe against that country follows the same bodies in the decision to lift the embargo.

    [03] The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation establishes programme length for the political parties and groups that are engaged in the electoral campaign

    PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS 2000 - CANDIDATES, PARTIES AND LEADERS IN FRONT OF THE ELECTORATE - this is the title of the programme which is broadcast by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI during the electoral campaign. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI will also broadcast news about the activity of the parties and the candidates. Programming time is guaranteed to all parliamentary parties and they have to subscribe within 48 hours since the announcement with the exact day of the Parliamentary elections.

    A session of analysis was made regarding the electoral campaign for the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation at which present was also the President Director General of the corporation, Andrei Dimitriu who stressed the fact that the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation promotes a well balanced electoral campaign in conditions of impartiality. He also recalled all representatives of political parties that the political campaign programmes have a special format in which each and every party pursues its own campaign while electoral messages are not allowed in any other programme.

    [04] President Emil Constantinescu met with a delegation of the group of friendship Kuwait - Romania

    At the Cotroceni Palace the President of Romania received the delegation of the parliamentary group of friendship Kuwait - Romania led by the president of that group Ahmad Nassar al Shorai'an. Previously the members of the delegation had been received by the chairman of the Romanian Senate Mircea Ionescu Quintus.

    [05] The Romanian delegation led by the foreign minister of Romania, Petre Roman, have been visiting Belgrade.

    At the press conference at the Romanian embassy in the Yugoslav capital the Romanian foreign affairs minister said the Romanian delegation had a number of proposals with a view to rebuild the traditional relations of friendship between the two countries,the collaboration in the economic domain as well as the support which Romania grants Yugoslavia for its integration in the internationala organizations a member of which Romania already is. At the same press conference the Romanian foreign minister announced that a delegation of Romanian businessmen soon visits Yugoslavia in order to concretely lay the foundations of the economic relations between the two countries.

    [06] The visit to Bucharest of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I

    His Sanctity, the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, has been making, starting Tuesday, a brotherly visit to Romania at the invitation of His Beatitude, Patriarch Teoctist. The programme of the visit includes meetings and talks with the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Teoctist, the granting to his Sanctity, Bartholomew I, of the diploma DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA of the ACADEMY OF ROMANIA, reception by the President of Romania and His Sanctity's participation in the festivities occasioned by the yearly pilgrimage to the relic of Saint Parascheni ( Paraschiva ) in Iasi. The silver casket with the relic is kept at the Metropolitan Church of the town of Iasi.

    The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His Sanctity, Bartholomew I, is for the sixth time in Romania and yesterday after landing at the Baneasa airport where he was welcomed with all honors by His Beatitude the Patriarch of Romania, Teoctist, he had a meeting with men of the cloth of the Bucharest Archbishopric. At his arrival at the airport present were also the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, the President of the Academy of Romania, Eugen Simion and other officials, both men of the cloth and laymen.

    Today His Sanctity Bartholomew I has received the diploma HONORIS CAUSA of the ACADEMY OF ROMANIA. The distinction which was awarded to the Patriarch of Constantinople by the President of the Academy of Romania, Eugen Simion, is a token of the recognition of the personality of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, in the domain of theology and also a token of the role he plays in our world today. At the festivity present were, alongside members of the Romanian Academy, His Beatitude Teoctist, the Patriarch of Romanian Orthodox Church, Presidential Counselor Traian Negrei, members of the Romanian Cabinet and of the Saint Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

    Bartholomew I has been received by the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu at the Cotroceni Palace. His Sanctity Bartholomew offered the President of Romania an icon depicting SAINT MARY'S CROSS, the original of which is kept ever since the second century A.D. at the Patriarchal Cathedral of Constantinople. Several copies were made on the occasion of the new millennium. Saying that he knew the President would not run for a new term in office, the Patriarch of Constantinople has thanked Mr. Emil Constantinescu as a friend of Romania for everything the President did for his country and for the international community during his mandate. The President has appreciated, in his turn, the activity of His Sanctity, as Ecumenical Patriarch, saying it was of special importance, especially for the Orthodox Christians of South Eastern Europe, where Orthodoxy is part of our tradition and the most important part of national identity of the peoples of the area.

    Today the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, receives His Sanctity, Bartholomew First, Patriarch of Constantinople: then he attends the festivity of decorating Romanian sportsmen and sportswomen that won medals at the Sydney Olympic Games and their coaches; then alongside Princess Anne attends the opening of the recently refurbished residence of the British Council here in our capital city; in the evening Princess Anne is expected at the Cotroceni Palace.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu officially launches his candidacy to the office of President of Romania at the Palace Elisabeta of the city of Bucharest.

    The Academy of Romania grants the title of DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA to his Sanctity Bartholomew I, Patriarch of Constantinople - the New Rome.

    The chief negociator of Romania for adherence to the European Union, Aurel Ciobanu Dordea is in Paris, France, for talks with the French officials of the European Union bodies.

    Visit to Bucharest continues of the Swedish minister of agriculture, food industry and fishing, Margareta Winberg, accompanied by the secretary of state for issues of equality of chances, Lise Berg. There is a press conference at the Information Center of Calea Victoriei in the afternoon about the visit.

    A delegation of the Romanian Foreign Ministry is in the Republic of Moldova for a three day visit. The delegation is led by secretary of state Mihai Razvan Ungureanu.

    Ceremony of awarding the ORDER OF JOURNALISTS by the Union of Professional Jounalists of Romania this afternoon; from the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the following will receive this ORDER: Dragos Seuleanu, Paul Grigoriu, Rodica Madosa, Ion Marinescu, Constantin Oprisiu, Adriana Frateanu, Jeaninne Lutic and Violeta Miron.

    Press Conference here in Bucharest which is linked to the launching of the British Romanian Ensurance Company / COMMERCIAL UNION at the Hotel Athenee Palace Hilton in the afternoon.
