  • [01] The President of Romania pays visit to Pitesti

    President Emil Constantinescu has paid a private visit to Pitesti. After walking the main street of the town the President of this country visited the CASA CARTII - Book House - Exhibition where he stopped for a few moments in front of the national exhibition SYMPHONY OF TULIPS now at its 23-rd edition, informs the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [02] President Constantinescu defends the Ministry of Waters, Forests and Enviromental Protection for the way it implements the LUPU BILL

    On Sunday President Constantinescu spoke in defense of the manner in which the Ministry of Waters, Forests and Environmental Protection applies the LUPU BILL. The President said that the LUPU BILL will be applied without any delay. Mr. Constantinescu also said that he firmly believed that nobody will dare take back anything outside the legal framework, be they houses of forests. MP Lupu criticized the minister of the environment Romica Tomescu for the way the LUPU BILL was implemented. RADOR

    [03] King Mihai and Queen Anne will celebrate EASTER in Romania

    Former sovereign of Romania, King Mihai and Queeen Anne will celebrate Easter in Romania announces a communique of the Royal House at Versoix sent to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. Next Saturday the King visits the IULIA HASDEU lyceum and then, in the evening, he attends the Resurrection Mass at DOMNITA BALASA Church. On Sunday, the King is the guest of the Patriarch of Romania for the Mass of the Second Resurrection at the patriarchal Church of Bucharest; then on 1 and 2 May the king visits the children hospital GRIGORE ALEXANDRESCU and a home for the orphans while on 2 May as well he attends the launching of the book ELENA QUEEN MOTHER OF ROMANIA translated from English by HUMANITAS. The book is written by Arthur Gould Lee. RADOR

    [04] Sympozium THE DANUBE in the context of European development

    The town of Braila hosted the sympozium DANUBE IN THE CONTEXT OF EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT organized by the NATIONAL DEFENSE COLLEGE. Attending were civilian and military personalities as well as men of the cloth. According to the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI stress was laid on the idea of turning the river into a vehicle of European integration and on the creation of the River Prefecture, following the model of the French Maritime Prefectures. The newly created institution could be integrated into the Ministry of Public Office, part of the Danube River Fleet Command and would have European legislation. RADOR

    [05] Assistance for the victims of the floods

    The town of Braila, the Eighth Army Corps EREMIA GRIGORESCU, citizens and commercial companies of the town sent assistance to victims of the floods of county Arad worth 1.6 billion lei. A motorcade of 25 trucks loaded with food,clothes and construction materials is on its way to county Arad, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Ion Diaconescu is in Turkey The Chairman of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies is making a visit to Turkey at the invitation of the chairman of the Grand National Assembly Ylderim Akbulut. Mr. Diaconescu will attend the 80-th anniversary of the creation of the Republic of Turkey, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [06] French Minister of European Affairs Pierre Moskovici visits Romania

    Mr. Pierre Moscovici, French Minister of European Affairs, is visiting Romania at the invitation of the Romanian Foreign Minister Petre Roman. The French diplomat will be received by President Emil Constantinescu, he will have talks with the Chairman of the Senate Mircea Ionescu Quintus, with Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu and with foreign minister Petre Roman. The talks of the two diplomats focus on the present stage of preparations of Romania for the integration in the European Union structures as well as Romanian - French opportunities of collaboration in this domain, taking into account the fact that France will take over Presidency of the Union in two months time. Another chapter of the talks is the taking over by Romania of the chairmanship of OSCE and the funds which the European Commission could give this country for unblocking the Danube plus the Romanian initiatives in the Pact of Stability for South Eastern Europe, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [07] Head of Chiefs of Staff of the Greek Land Forces on a visit to Romania

    The Heads of the Chiefs of Staff of the land forces of Greece and Romania, lieutenant general Mihail Panagiotakis and army corps general Mihail Popescu had a meeting here in Bucharest during which they discussed issues of joint interest for the reform process and the modernization of land forces with a view to achieving objectives of interoperability as well as Romanian - Greek collaboration in the future international command structures. At the same time the wish of both parties was expressed to expand bilateral relations by exchange of experience in military education at level of great units and units of the land forces of both countries. Also tackled was the granting of Greek assistance to the implementation of the multiannual plan of Romanian integration in North Atlantic structures. In connection with this subject general Panagiotakis said Greece had already made the decision to support the integration of Romania in NATO structures while the Greek military forces are supporting the efforts of our country to join the alliance.

    The visit to Romania of the Greek lieutenant general once again demonstrates the particular attention which Greece attaches to the strengthening of the southern flank of the Alliance said general Panagiotakis adding that in the context of the latest developments in the Balkans it is in the interest of the Alliance for Romania to become a member of NATO.

    In a statement quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the guest, general Panagiotakis, Head of the Chiefs of Staff of the Greek land forces, said he was impressed by the level of preparation and instruction of Romanian military specifying in this sense that Romanian armed forces do not lack anaything in order to be integrated into the NATO structures. In his turn the Head of the Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian land forces, general Mihail Popescu said the military in the Greek special forces will be trained in Romania while the mountain corps military of this country will make exercises in the Greek mountains.

    The two generals, Panagiotakis and Popescu, also agreed that the young army officers of both armies spend their vacations in the other country in conditions of reciprocity; the decision holds good for young lieutenants and captains of both armies, that of Greece and that of Romania, who can thus spend their holidays, if they wish, in the other country.     [08] Romanian Orthodox Church celebrated Palms Sunday

    The Romanian Orthodox Church celebrated Palms Sunday, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI transmits and adds that this whole week masses are celebrated in all Orthodox Churches of the country in memory of the suffering of the Savior. Easter is celebrated next Saturday night by all believers that belong to the Orthodox Eastern Church. RADOR

    The Dome of Piata Unirii of the town of Timisoara housed the Easter mass which was also attended by the Papal Nuncio to Romania, His Excellency Jean- Claude Perisset. RADOR

    On Sunday between 11:00 - 17:00 the Cotroceni Palace was opened to the public that visited the painting exhibition of Alexandra Nechita who is considered by art critics of the United States as the painter that continues on the line of Picasso; the public also visited the Cotroceni National Museum, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     On Sunday the town of Botosani celebrated its Holiday by a festive concert of the brass band in the park who bears the name of the national poet of Romania, MIHAI EMINESCU, by the symphony concert of the local Philarmonic under the motto SONG OF SPRING and by the show SUEDE CLOTH TUXEDO staged by the local theater based on the play written by Stanislav Stratiev and directed by Ion Bordeianu informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    A delegation led by Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, secretary of state with the Foreign Ministry is in New York for an assesment conference of the Treaty of Nuclear Nonproliferation which takes place in the interval 24 April - 19 May.
