  • [01] The Senate elected their new Standing Bureau

    The Senate of Romania resumed work as part of a new session on Tuesday. After having paid hommage to late Ion Ratiu, an outstanding political personality who recently passed away, the Senators proceeded to the election of the new Standing Bureau including the new Chairman of the Senate. After a first ballot, with 72 votes for, elected was Mircea Ionescu Quintus, the President of the National Liberal Party.

    Also in the first ballot elected were the other members of the Standing Bureau as follows: Doru Ioan Taracila, Nicolae Vacaroiu both of PDSR, Ulm Spineanu of PNTCD and Dan Vasiliu of PD as vice-chairmen, Alexandru Mortun of PNL, Mircea Ioan Popa of PNTCD, Puscas Zoltan of UDMR, Dumitru Badea of PRM as secretaries and Constantin Sava of PDSR as well as Sorin Vornicu of PD as quaestors reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [02] The President of PNL - National Liberal Party - Mircea Ionescu Quintus was elected Chairman of the Romanian Senate

    With 72 votes for and 38 votes against the Senate voted in the first ballot Mircea Ionescu Quintus as Chairman of the Senate. The newly elected Chairman of the Senate made a brief speech after the ballot in which he said that he thanked all those present for the confidence bestowed on him and he promised to treat both the incumbent power and the opposition on an equal footing. All the parliamentary groups then expressed their satisfaction at the election of the new president of the Senate, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports. RADOR

    [03] The Chamber of Deputies approved the structure and membership of the new Standing Bureau

    The Plenum of the Chamber of Deputies approved on Tuesday with 263 votes for and 15 against the structure and membership of the new Standing Bureau. The four vice-chairmen are Vasile Lupu of PNTCD, Adrian Nastase and Miron Mitrea of PDSR as well as Bogdan Niculescu Duvaz of PD. Secretaries are Acsinte Gaspar of PDSR, Andrei Chiliman of PNL, Vasile Miclaus of PUNR and Konya Hamar Sandor of UDMR. Quaestors are Tanase Barde of PNTCD, Alexandru Lapusan of PDSR, Gheorghe Albu of PD and Ghazi Gherasim of the parliamentary group of national minorities, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [04] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu presented in the session of the Executive Bureau of the Government the strategy of development on medium term as well as the budget for the current year

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu presented the two documents during Tuesday's session of the Executive Bureau of the Cabinet which approved them; the documents will be submitted to the Cabinet members session on Thursday to be analysed and then passed, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. During the meeting the Prime Minister said that the strategy for development on a medium term is an open document which includes the present and the future of decisions in our economy and which rallies all strategies which have been worked out until now by various institutions of economic analysis. The Prime Minister mentioned that the halving of inflation in the year 2000 prepares the ground for at least equal performances in the next years. At the same time the Romanian Prime Minister said that he was most determined to wage war against corruption and bureaucracy and hence decided to cut by half both administration personnel and vehicles used by the Government. He said he hoped the example would be followed by prefects, mayors and company managers. In as far as strategy of development on a medium term is concerned PM Isarescu said it has to become a national commandment of the crisis administration and, at the same time, of a nature to create management able to prepare future decisions. It was decided that the Industrial Gross Product be at least 6.5 per cent starting 2001. RADOR

    [05] Bucharest hosted a conference on the theme YOUTH, A PRIORITY ACCORDING TO THE LIBERAL CONCEPTION

    The Conference Hall of the Institute of Liberal Studies in Bucharest hosted the conference with the title YOUTH, A PRIORITY ACCORDING TO THE LIBERAL CONCEPTION. Attending were representatives of all major political parties both of the incumbent power and of the opposition. Crin Antonescu who is Minister of Youth and Sports, a member of the National Liberal Party, said, according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, that the main issue facing youth the same as the entire Romanian society is continuation of cliches that bar genuine communication.     [06] Agreement between the governments of Romania and Japan

    On Tuesday the accord was signed between the governments of the two countries which as RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports is worth 500 million yen which is equal to five million USD. The non refundable loan granted by Japan to Romania is meant to compensate for the losses which we suffered following the Kosovo conflict and it will be used by the economic sectors of Romania to buy goods and services. The intermediate agent is JAPAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION SYSTEM. RADOR

    [07] Innauguration of the Center of Banking Hazards

    This unit will operate within the National Bank of Romania with the aim to provide information on debtors of more than 200 million lei owed to a Romanian bank or a Romanian subsidiary of a foreign banking institution. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports that banking frauds will be avoided in the future and that greater transparency of the system is ensured. RADOR

    [08] The medal MAN OF THE YEAR 1999 was awarded to Pope John Paul II by the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation

    The first medal of the series MAN OF THE YEAR was awarded for 1999 to Pope John Paul II as part of a ceremony which unfolded in the Broadcasting House of Radio Romania at the Press Center. The President - Director General of Radio Romania, Mr. Andrei Dimitriu handed over the medal and the diploma to the Nuncio of the Holy See to Romania, Monsignor Jean-Claude Perisset. In his address Mr. Dimitriu said the title is a token of the recognition of the contribution made by the Pope for the cause of democracy, of respect of human rights and personal freedom by listeners of RADIO ROMANIA in more than 30 countries of the world. Monsignor Perisset answered by saying that the title is a confirmation of the truth that Christian spiritual values upheld by the Pope are the same as those cultivated by the Romanian society. Also present at the ceremony was Teofan Sinaitul who is the Patriarchal Bishop Vicar and who said that Pope John Paul II has been playing a very important role in getting closer Western and Eastern Christianities as a premise for the future union of the Churches, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
