  • [01] President Constantinescu's Visit to Israel

    The Romanian delegation headed by president Emil Constantinescu started a state visit to Israel on Monday, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The main objective of this visit is to foster the Romanian-Israeli partnership, especially in the political, economic, commercial and cultural areas. In president Ezer Weizman's opinion, the visit would contribute to deepen the friendship between the two peoples. The Romanian head of state expressed his country's wish to further develop the bilateral relations.

    Emil Constantinescu also visited the Memorial "Yad Vashem", dedicated to the marthyrs and heroes of the Holocauts, and during a short meeting with the press stated antisemitism was definitively extinct in Romania. In the afternoon the Romanian head of state met Diodoros I, the orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem in the Holly City, and visited the Holly Tomb. The patriarch conferred Romania's president the Great Order of the Knights of the Holly Tomb, and president Constantinescu conferred the patriarch the Great Cross of the Order Romania's Star.

    In the evening, president Ezer Weizman and Mrs. Leoma Weizman offered an official dinner to president Emil Constantinescu and Mrs. Nadia Constantinescu. Before the dinner the two heads of state held talks and attended the signing of an agreement concerning environment protection by Ioan Pascu, secretary of state in the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, and Mrs. Dalia Yitzic, Israeli environment minister.     [02] Romania Is Interested to Build Good Partnership Relations with the Russian Federation

    In a press statement issued on Monday and quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, foreign affairs minister Petre Roman reminds the decisive contribution of the ex-Russian president Boris Yeltzin in strifling the attempted coup d'etat in August 1991, and his outstanding role in promoting democracy in Russia. His efforts made possible the signing in May 1997 of the document establishing the mutual cooperation and security relations between NATO and the Russian Federation. Petre Roman expresses his hope the democratization process will continue in Russia, and stresses that Romania, extremely interested to build good partnership relations with the Russian Federation as democratic and stable state, will aim at fostering the bilateral relations and at developing the economic and commercial exchanges.     [03] Ten Years Since the Creation of the Germans Democratic Forum in Romania

    The executive chairman of the Germans Democratic Forum in Romania, Eberhardt Wolfgang Witstock said on Monday that, ten years after the creation of this organization, the ethnic German minority in Romania was well represented in Parliament and in the central and local administration. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, Witstock expressed his confidence the year 2000 would bring Romania economic and social recovery, and an improved image abroad. The leader of the ethnic German minority expressed his availability to help strengthen the relations between Romania and Germany. RADOR

    [04] Priorities for 2000, in the Opinion of the PNTCD Leaders

    PNTCD president Ion Diaconescu considers 2000 can very well be the year of the country's economic recovery and of social relations normalization. During a meeting with the press, the party leader said, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the climate of trust on the international arena allowed Romania to take credits under good conditions. As for the National Peasants Christian-Democratic Party, Ion Diaconescu expressed his hope it would score good results in the elections. To this purpose, the Standing Delegation would meet by the end of this month, to determine the strategy of the elections campaign.

    PNTCD vice-president Mircea Ciumara, coordinator of the economic ministries, said the Government would continue the tax reform and would try to act coherently, so that the first positive results might be seen in six months. Ciumara stated publicly he was not agent or informer of the former Security. RADOR
