  • [01] Dismissal of the Prime Minister of Romania, Radu Vasile, a statement by the spokesman of the President of Romania

    According to the Constitution of this country the President of Romania has the duty, on the basis of Article 80, to watch over the unfolding of the activity of public authority. The President of Romania came to the conclusion that Prime Minister Radu Vasile could no longer fulfill his obligations of PM as most of his cabinet members resigned which ultimately means that the government cannot work any longer. At the same time the President of Romania has noted that all parties of the government coalition, which were consulted in keeping with Article 102 of the Constitution of Romania when Radu Vasile was designated Prime Minister of this country, have withdrown political support. In order to solve the situation, on the basis of Article 106, paragraph 2 and Article 105 of the Constitution of Romania, the President dismissed Radu Vasile by Decree 426 of 13 December 1999. Also in keeping with the Constitution of Romania, Article 106, paragraph 2, the President designated by Decree 427 of 13 December 1999 Alexandru Athanasiu, minister of labor and social security, as Prime Minister ad interim until the new Government is formed. The President also asked the outgoing Cabinet members to continue activity until a new Cabinet starts working. All Cabinet members have accepted to do so under the leadership of ad interim PM Alexandru Athanasiu. RADOR

    [02] Yearly meeting of the Head of the Romanian Diplomacy Andrei Plesu with ambassadors accredited in Bucharest

    The seat of the Foreign Ministry of Romania hosted the yearly meeting of the Head of the Romanian diplomacy with members of the Diplomatic Corps in Bucharest; Andrei Plesu thanked the Ambassadors for all they did for Romania and added that efforts will be continued for the more enhanced collaboration of our country with the countries with which we already have good relations. Stress was also laid on the visits to Romania of a number of important personalities among whom Pope Paul John II, an event which Foreign Minister Andrei Plesu estimated as special and unique in our contemporary history.     [03] The process of Romania's accession to the European Union has become irreversible

    The Head of the European Commission to Romania, Fokion Fotiadis, said on Monday in Bucharest as part of a press conference that the decision of the Council of Europe in Helsinki to give the green light to the start of negociations for Romania's accession to the European Union is a historic step for our country representing also a pledge of the European Union to have Romania as a member in the following years. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, Fokion Fotiadis, Head of the European Commission Delegation to our country said that the process is irreversible and that these negociations offer Romania more than a motivation to double efforts to comply with the accession criteria as soon as possible and he added that the process of Romania's accession to the European Union is a matter of time only until this country becomes a full member of the European Union. The Union allots Romania 640 million Euro in non refundable loans added to the up to 500 million Euro a year from the European Bank of Investments. Mr. Fotiadis also said that the special attention which the European Commission grants Romania is also reflected by the visit which President Prodi and Commissioner Verheugen will pay to Romania on 13 January 2000.     [04] Romanian - Bulgarian accord of legal matters collaboration

    General prosecutor of Romania Mircea Criste signed together with the General Prosecutor of Bulgaria, Nikola Silcev, an accord of collaboration for making combatting of transfrontier crimes more efficient. Nikola Silcev said the promise made to the President of Romania is being kept namely that of investigating cigarette smuggling, adding that a preliminary investigation is under way, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs.     [05] Press Conference of the Governor of the National Bank of Romania Mugur Isarescu

    National Bank of Romania hosted a press conference on Monday during which Governor Mugur Isarescu estimated that this year will end with an inflation rate of 55 per cent and a shortage of current account under twelve hundred million USD and an exchange rate of close to 18.000 lei for one USD, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. There are three scenarios for Romania's economic development next year finalized with an inflation rate of 25, 30 and 35 per cent. Mugur Isarescu added that Romania is no longer to be found on the list of countries having problems in foreign debt pay back, a list which the International Monetary Fund made more than a year ago and on which Romania was listed alongside the Ukraine, Pakistan and Ecuador. It is possible that Romania receives the second instalment of the loan given by the IMF until the end of the year. Next year foreign debt will be of two thousand million USD with its peak in February next when we have to pay back close to 400 million USD. RADOR
