  • [01] Debates of UDMR - Union of Democratic Mgyars of Romania - Congress

Marko Bela was reelected President of the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania-UDMR-with 274 votes for of the toal of 431 as against 107 votes for which went to his opponent in the race Kincses Elod President of the Mures branch of UDMR. The Congress has thus sanctioned moderate line of President Marko Bela and agreed with furthering UDMR siding with ruling coalition says RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. Mr. Marko Bela presented a report to the participants in the Congress asking coalition partners to work together for the solution of the problems of the country and for meeting the specific demands of Magyar minority. He rejected any analogy with the situation in Kosovo and insisted on the fact that Magyars of Transylvania seek to change situation by political means. On the other hand honorary president Laszlo Tokes said the precedent in Yugoslavia must be used for a negociation of the concept of autonomy and complained that national minorities of Romania are subjected to ethnical cleansing. Bishop Laszlo Tokes came before the Congress of UDMR with proposals and initatives among which the altering of the paragraph of the Constitution defining Romania as a national state. Bishop Tokes also wishes that a round table be held rallying Romanians and Magyars, the inclusion be stated of the principle of Transylvanism in the UDMR programme by which special policies for Transylvania be adopted also by strategic partnership of Magyars and Romanians in the area. At the same time in his opinion UDMR should leave the ruling coalition, the Treaty with Hungary should be modified as the situation of Magyars in Romania has not improved in any way. Hungarian State Secretary Nemeth Zsolt was asked by the media which was the stand of the Budapest Government on the concept of autonomy and his answer reads that if UDMR makes a decision in this sense the Hungarian Government will find ways to support it as Hungary is also supporting aspiration to autonomy of Magyars living in Vojvodina. The Congress adopted the statute and the programme of UDMR. The main modification of the programme refers to relaunching regional policy of UDMR in the areas where Magyar community lives, a policy that should be supported by strategy, particularly in the economic domain, aimed at decentralization, as well as in the joint programme of the coalition. In a press conference Mr. Marko Bela, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI,said he wished the building of partnership with Romanians all over Transylvania as this is the area of interethnic living together, a reason which would demand specific partnership that will have particulr importance in the economic field as well.
